B&W Tegu Ok i have an empty 40 gallon breeder tank and i was really thinkn of starting with a baby black & white tegu . I also have a 4x2x2 custom cage i could put him in for a lil too. Just how much maintence is really needed on these guys? like i was considering a bearded dragon too but i see that they go the bathroom like everyday and a lot and thats just seems like a pain to check everyday. The tegu’s seem to have there own personality and thats what draws my attention and just how big of a cage will i need when he’s full grown. I really enjoy my snakes but i wouldn’t mind getting into something else . snakes are great bc there require little maintance , other then handling like everyday or every other. So its even a tegu a or retic.

B&W Tegu the tanks u have now r fine for a young tegu. when full grown something around 8x2 is minnimum its always better though if u get a bigger cage i have mine which is still small around a foot in length in a 6x1.5 tank. maintanance wise honestly its not that hard or at least it seems that way for me. i feed mine a variety of foods daily, handle everyday to everyother day or take it out and let it roam. mist it down once a day or so, then spot clean once a week. i used to have waterdragons, anoles uromastyx and alot of other reptiles and it seems like the tegu is the easiest to care for besides the caging

B&W Tegu For now, what you have is ok... like the guy below me said you will definitely need a larger cage. I currently have a smaller b/w hes about 2ft, my cage is 8feet in length, 6feet wide, and about 10 feet tall, plus i have a burrowing addition which is the same dimensions for LxW and only 3 ft deep, along with a side addition that is about 10 long 2feet wide and 3 feet high.
Although my cage is a little excessive for my b/w i think it fits him, and he definitely likes it :)
Maintenance wise, they are very dependent upon your attention.
For the guy below me ... only checking once a week with that small of a cage repulses me ... sorry, but it just does.
Even with my large cage, i check for feces and anyother fluid that he may have excreted DAILY!
Also, temperatures are very important, i check my temps everyother day, if not daily.
WATER! I change the water every other day, or when he has defecated in it (which is usually the case).
I keep the water warm, about 80 degrees, it helps to keep the cage humid and aid him in shedding.
Handling is also a large part of my tegus life, i handle him everday for about an hour, sometimes more sometimes less depending on my schedule, and of course Zeke’s (my tegu) mood :)
All in all, i guess i would say they aren’t the most needy lizards, but they still do need alot of attention and maintenance. If you are not up to the challenge, please do not condemn a helpless lizard to a horrible life, but if you are willing to put the time, effort, and money into him/her by all means get a b/w they are fantastic reptiles!

B&W Tegu Hey man. Well i say go for it hahah they are great. Care isnt that bad really. Id say more then most snakes but nowhere near a dog? hehe I use to have to replace water daily cuz he poops in it but now i take him out for pooping. So its every otehr day....handling is really your choice but more is better....I try to when i can cuz its fun to watch him crawl around....poop picking can be avoided if he learns to poo when you take him out or in a corner. Feeding might be the worse part of all. they eat like beasts. try 50+ crickets per feeding. So its really depending if you have enough time and some cash moneys....if so they are amazing pets!

B&W Tegu 50 crickets per feeding ... that is NOT good ... DO NOT feed your reptile that many in one sitting, as the exoskeleton of the crickets can cause impaction.

B&W Tegu care for a tegu is dependent on the tegu.
i have a columbian gold and hes not to bad i check the cage daily. he is still very young and flighty so i dont pick him up a whole lot. as far as cleaning up messes mine about 90 percent of the time will do his busniess in the water tub so i just swap it out once or twice a day depending on smell and sign of soild waste. mines diet is crickets, ground turkey, and mice for the time being(getting a roach coloney going and nightcrawlers as well so those are ognan be my staple).

B&W Tegu My tegu is about 3 feet long. I was told by the breeder i bought him from to let him eat all he wants for 10 mins. I cut him off crickets after 50 and mix in some turkey. Lately though chicks and rats ae mostly what he eats....Gotta start freezing up some extra rats and stuff....
