you need a bigger tank, more places for him to hide and climb (branches, plants, caves, ect.) and a deep substrate he can burrow in that is not sand (especially not calci cand, that stuff is the worst). for his size i would recommend about 5 inches of substrate (but more is always better). i use bed-a-beast for my small burrowing animals but that will get expensive for a whole tegu cage. there is some type of mulch that alot of people use. maybe someone else can help you better about the substrate.
oh and you need a place for him to bask. like a big flat rock or something.

Umm yeah that tank is a bit too small. That tank will prolly last you maybe a month. I use sifted top soil as substrate. My big guy doesnt get it in his mouth cuz i feed him out of the cage anyways. They need to be able to dig and hide or they will stress out. Pet shops just dont let them dig so people can see them. What are your temps?
