Black and White Tegu or Savvanah Monitor?

I was planning on getting a savannah monitor but i have heard that the tegus are cheaper and nicer. is this true? i am planning on getting the lizard as a baby, how mouch do you think a baby B&W tegu would go for compaired to a 20$ baby savannah monitor? and how different are they to care for, becuase right now my tank is set up for a savannah but im not planning on purchasing for a couple more weeks so i could change it to suit a tegu. and how big do the tegus get when full grown?

well i had both before and i loved my black and white way more than my savannah and i really dont know why...my savannah was about 3 and my tegu was about 3.5 almost 4 feet. ummm tegus love cypress mulch...its the best bedding for them in my point of view and some of the other guys on the forum explained why its good for them to me aswell so thats wat i go with now...umm i got crpress mulch...about 5 inches of digging space and a water dish bit its big enough for him to jump in...his uvb lighting and about 2 hideouts and his rock he loves to bask on and his branches...i currently have a baby black and white now....hes doing great..hes feeding on crickets dusted with calcium and dawed pinkies and diced fruit bits.....my savannah jus ate rodents so thats 1 difference and tegus tend to look more pretty and nice while monitors have a rough look to them...but i started with monitors and now i have tegus and love em...so jus read a bit more about the black and whites..

the one thing that makes me turn away from the tegu is that they heibernate, do they only hibernate if you let the temps drop or is it unhealthy for them to not hibernate? and how much do you think a baby black and white tegu would cost?

Yes, hibernation is very important. I hear if a tegu misses its hibernations it wont breed? i dont know. its a theory. Well mine hibernated for 4 months but i was ok with it. A tegu that doesnt hibernate can grow a foot more then a tegu that doesnt but i can wait for my guy to grow. Ok tegus cost more then monitors. i bought my monitor for 39 and my tegus for 120. But your choice there

ok so if they need to hibernate i dont think i will get a tegu, becuase i dont want to have a lizard that will be hibernating 4-6 months of the year. unless they can live healthily without hibernating. and im not looking to breed them if that has anything to do with it.

eh, So yea tegus are definitely more expensive to purchase as babies.

Also, hibernation isnt necessary to have a healthy tegu ... both of the b/ws that i have arent going to hibernate. it is true that without brumation, your tegu will not breed. And if that isnt a problem to you then i guess you could look into a tegu. Just make sure you do some more research before you purchase a tegu.

(also, me and a friend have started attempting to breed our red. She just came out of hibernation and we are just deciding on a male to pick from :). Its guna be a difficult road, thats for sure, reds are mad hard to breed, but i think we can do it. Ill keep yall updated).

and savs cost more to feed than tegus even though tegus are very girthy...........considering monitors are strictly carnivorous youd have no other choice but to stock up on mice, chicks and ground turkey......tegus can eat oll of that along with fruits, vegetables etc

Yeah you can still have a healthy tegu without the hibernation and they will grow alot faster.
Ohh yeah Mike, keep us posted and if you get some babies and plan to sell then give more details hehe. By then my tegus will be moving on to their new cage and my 120 gallon will be open ;)

Umm Ive seen some Arg B/W anywhere between 80-175 each. But you have to think that you re paying for quality. I paid 120 for mine but thats because i got 20% off from the sale week and i bought a pair. So look around and do some homework and you ll have an awesome pet

Not all Monitors are fed a diet strictly based on rodents and other mammals. Most if not all accept insects including Bosc Monitors which was one placed in question. Do some research yourself before you offer advice on a species. Ackie Monitors can be fed a solid diet of insects alone and thrive as well as Bosc and other smaller sized Monitors. Most are offered a variety of mice, rats, chicks, crickets, roaches, night crawlers and others as well as seafood items.

So yes while they are carnivorous they still have a multitude of prey items to be offered is all I’m trying to say. Ground turkey is a sadly poor choice as well. Either way please do more research before offering advice and good luck to the original poster on deciding.

monitors are cheaper to buy and possibly more of an adventure to keep, but I went with a tegu. I have looked at videos on youtube to see there temperaments with there owners compared to monitors and I think they are a tamer animal to keep than a monitor. I just bought one and as I type, she is asleep on the back of my chair under a draped pants. She is very calm at about just over 2 feet and I have only had her for 3 days and she is already used to the dogs. I didnt chose a monitor also because of size and didn’t want to scare the neighbors, whereas a tegu is more beautiful and people tent to have colors to wow at before criticizing and hiding. If you haven’t chosen yet, think about it like I have, watch the videos, look up info and opinions on forums, and check the bank. Thats it from me!

I have a savannah. Im very happy with him, but he bites tailwhips hisses, and hides most of the day. He seems miserable. But thats part of what I like. I’m trying to get him to trust me but its a long slow process. I’ve never had a tegu but I think the taming process is easier.

Also for a savannah you need alot of room, enough for a 8x4x4 cage at least. I’m not sure how big tegus get. Ackies are a smaller more active monitor but also more expensive.

I’m looking to add to my collection I’m either going to get 2 ackies or a tegu.

I have only had this tegu for a week and its a great experience. Look on Tegutalk.com forum for more info. It makes you feel great about having one. I even slept with mine under my arm like a teddy bear
