I have a comment about how u handle the situation you described above...

When she does that.. squirms and whatnot, and you put her down, that is known as negative reinforcement. And by doing this you are just adding to her mental state that if she lashes out enough, eventually you will put her down.
Although she is big, she can still be controlled, when she starts lashing around grab about two inches above her hind legs and push her against your body, then with your free hand cover her eyes. It has the same effect it does on a bird when you put a blanket over the cage.
Once she calms down, you can remove your hand that is cover her eyes and then go back to how you were hold her before.

Now to the question about diets,
That is a very controversial question, and the answer has no definite answer, but i will tell you what i feed all of my tegus

Merricle "turducken" (canned organic dog food, more or less beef stew)
cantaloupe
honeydew
blueberries
strawberries
apples
pears
peaches
grapes
blackberries
raspberries
carrots
apricots
plums
banana*
cucumber
crickets
mealworms
superworms
earthworms
waxworms*
pinkies -> fuzzies -> hoppers -> adult mice -> sm. rats
cooked meat i.e. chicken, turkey, duck (organic of course)
hard boiled eggs
cockroaches
fish i.e. goldfish, rosies, silverbacks
crayfish, shrimp (live only)
snails* (removed from shell)
feeder frogs
anoles
house geckos (adults only)
steamed veggies (best mixed with worms)

* indicates, should be fed as a treat

If you have any other specific questions about the diet i supply my tegus, do not hesitate to ask :)

Mike, i read through your food list, and I saw goldfish. I’m not sure what your take on this is, but I’ve heard many negative things about feeding goldfish. One is that pet store feeders tend to be high in mercury, and some nasty parasites. I still haven’t found out if this is just speculation, but I was wondering what your opinion was.
