Advice on claws Hi I have a 3year old B/W Argentine, i have had him for about 41/2 months and his claws are real sharp, is it safe to trim them as its hard to find a vet to deal with him where i live? he is in real good health apart from that ?

Advice on claws Instead of trimming them, you should have something in there that will ware their nails down, OR use a nail file to file the nails into a rounded shape..
For all the animals ive ever kept whether birds, dogs, or herps ive always filed, never trimmed .. because even although you dont hit the blood vessel there are very sensitive nerves around the vessels and even though your animal doesnt bleed, it still feels the pain.

Advice on claws i agree with Mike but if hes claws are long now maybe get them trimmed and make sure your tegu has plenty of rocks and things to keep hes claws worn down so you wont have to trim them again

Advice on claws I’m not sure what people mean by putting something down that will allow a Tegu to trim its own nails. I suggest filing, trimming can result in you cutting the quick. If you do cut it have some quickstop on hand to stop the bleeding, it should be fine.

Advice on claws Greentriple, as in rocks... my enclosure has decent size rocks (that cannot be consumed) jammed by his swimming pool so when he gets in and out it shapes his nails.. so i only file them once in a while.
And although quickstop works exceptionally well, why induce unnecessary pain to your herp, when its very easily avoidable?

Advice on claws or you can just let your tegu have sharp claws as nature intended, really if you cant handle a few scratches why are you keeping large lizards??? Then again I forgot tegus are quickly becoming the "lap dogs" of the herpetocultural community, it’s quite a shame. The only time you should "trim" or "file" the nails is when it begins to pose an issue for the animal itself, not a wimpy owner who cant deal with a little pain.
