 Weird question

anyone ever heard of keeping your tegu on sand with hides? someone from my work says he keeps his on said and then just puts hides all over the tank instead of dealing with bark

 Weird question

Sand does not do a thing for the humidity. Tegus need adequate humidity levels in the tank for proper care, buddy. Even if you wet the sand, its just going to be a clumpy mess that you dont want your tegu to eat, man. If you wanna do the sand thing, then mix it real good with topsoil with out pesticides or plant food...STRAIGHT TOPSOIL...JUST DIRT. A lot of the bags they sell at garden centers today have all that poisonous junk in it that wouldnt be good for the tegu either. The topsoil-sand mix might get the humidity high enough and would hold the burrows really well when the tegu burrows through it.

Even with all this said....I still would avoid the sand, this would be the way to do it if you wanted to try it, ya know lol.

Tegu’s also prefer to burrow and will end up having sand get in their noses and eyes too.
Since they are from forested areas it is just better to keep them on mulch....you can still give them lots of hides to shove around their homes and bask on top of.
