true dwarf tegus are extremely rare to find in captivity. i cant remember the scientific name of them right now.

ameivas are distantly related to tegus but are really nothing like them. if your looking for something that acts like a tegu but smaller then dont get an ameiva.

i strongly recommend you dont get an ameiva. go find my other posts from when i had an ameiva to know more detail why.

Callopistes maculatus is the scientific name, there’s also another species Callopistes flavipunctuatus (I beleive) that get’s approx 3’ and is quite varanid in appearance.

Ameivas certainly are more entertaining than a lot of other species out there, however 99.99% of them are imported and arrive into the United States in a very poor, dehydrated condition harboring a multitude of internal parasites.
Most don’t survive more than a year in captivity. They really shouldnt be kept by beginning hobbyists, yet because they are cheap and cool looking they are commonly sold in pet stores which cater to....beginning hobbyists.

they are very amusing to watch when the run up and down the length of the tank chasing each other. We have had ours for a while now and the person at the reptile expo that we got them from had them for a couple of years so i am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with them. I am not a begginer in reptiles for sure but because they are so cheap and easy to care for why would they not be good for begginers?
