Dezie, b&w Tegu vid Nice video. Dezie is very "impressive". How is his tolerance/attitude toward you?

Dezie, b&w Tegu vid Thanks for watching!
Dezie is a sweetie (atleast with me). He may huff some while in the tank but he gets over it. He is rather shy around others though. He will hide in my armpit when people are around him. He is not much different then a cat, he crawls on my lap when he wants a good snooze and he will nudge my hand if he wants a good pet...He is a great boy!

Dezie, b&w Tegu vid Sounds alot like my Nile monitor, all is great when its just her and I, but, If I’m holding her and someone comes too close she will posture and tailwhip at them, in the process of becoming defensive she will get a good anchor hold on me with those sharp talons before tailwhipping at the intruder. Ouch! Its really cool how in the "right hands" a reptile will recognize and trust only their keeper. Sounds like you have a strong bond with Dezie. How long have you been keeping reptiles?

Dezie, b&w Tegu vid I have had reptiles since in my early teens (I am 32 now). I started with two female iguanas that were my babies. My parents were pretty good with letting me get them and convert the basement into a large reptile room and a huge 8x6’ enclosure that filled most of it. They were babies when I got them and got to be around 5’ and were so tame and friendly. I used to give them free roam at certain times of the day and they would hop on my dogs back and get rides around the house. When I turned 20 I had to find them a home because my parents were moving and I could not afford an appartments that would allow the large enclosure. It also didn’t help that my bf at the times was scared to death of my iguanas and not a fan of reptiles in general! I talked him into getting beardies and we bred them for a few years then we got a vield Chameleon (very mean girl!), a uro, a bts. We got out of the hobby yet again as life got so busy with kids and jobs but I am slowly starting up again. I finally talked him into letting( I say letting not that I need permission but we both own this house) me get a tegu, I hope to get another iguana one day and I have high hopes for more monitor type lizards but one step at a time. At the moment it is just the tegu and a couple fat-tailed geckos.
Vanessa
p.s Niles are beautiful monitors....you must have spent alot of time to have him bond so well ith you. With a tegu the odds are on my side with a nile the odds are against you!!

Dezie, b&w Tegu vid Yep, some people must be born animal lovers, I started in my early teens too (46 now). Started out with Iguanas, Tegus and Speckled Caimans. In the passed 20 yrs. I’v kept mostly monitors. At this time I’m keeping two Savannah’s, three male Iguanas, one female Nile monitor, one male Water monitor, multiple insect colonies.(feeders) and my 4yr old daughters breaded dragon and leopard gecko. I gave my Argentine to a awesome kid just starting out in the hobby, if all gos well and he does well with him, I’ll let him keep him and thinking of getting a colombian? Although the Blues look very interesting? With the monitors I use the hands off method to trust build, everything is done on the animals terms/speed. It takes some time but very rewarding when they trust you enough to interact you. Here is my favorite video of my Nile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME2IQqsj65Q

Dezie, b&w Tegu vid I would love to have space to have a house full of monitors but its not in the cards at the moment. My black and white is in an 8x4x4 that works well, he seems to like it. It has 2 sunken hides and a 15-20g pond with a working water fall to aid the humidity. He likes his real plants and actually leaves them alone. I recently found a good home for my red tegu who was actually older then Dezie but she was only 17" in length as she hibernated all summer long. He started to display aggression towards me when he would pick up her scent, even though they were not in sight of each other so I thought it best to find her a good home since I have bonded so well with Dezie I would never be parting with him so I wanted to address the aggression right away. I was considering getting into snakes as I have never owned or snake or had much exposure but I just don’t know if they would lack the personality aspect that you find with monitors/larger lizards. Oh well it really doesn’t matter at the moment cause my hubby is really creeped out by snakes. For some reason he would rather me have a 5’ lizard with razor sharp teeth and a bone crushing jaw and a tail that could whip a slice right into your arm oh and I almost forgot those darned talons that tear your skin all up even when unintentionally!! That suits me just fine.

Dezie, b&w Tegu vid LOL, Your Hubby sounds like my wife, I wanted to get into snakes but she drew the line very deep on that subject. "NO SNAKES". She has no problem with these monster monitors reaching 7-9 ft. but "NO" even on the smallest snake. The snake phobia is hilarious, my buddy stands 6’4", he lifted a tire in my shop and then dropped it, running out of the shop yelling "GET THE BOA, GET THE BOA!!!!". It was a new born pencil snake. I was rolling on the floor in tears/laughing. The poor guy nearly puked. I find all reptiles fascinating and they all have unique personalities.
