Blue Tegu Hey I was just wondering if anyone would have any recommendations for how to get my tegu out of his cage when it is feeding time. He is super calm and friendly when he is not hungry and every time i take him out. Although when he is hungry i wouldnt dare put my hand in the tank. I was just curious because i would like to be able to take him out whenever i want whether he is hungry or not. Anyways here are some pictures of him. Sorry in advance for anyone who doesnt like feeding pictures only good ones i have of him at the moment.
Enjoy

Blue Tegu Great looking Blue.
Sounds like he has a great feeding response, I wouldn’t want to tame that at all. Keeping reptiles is a give and take relationship, when he isn’t hungry you can hold him ok, when he is hungry he is excited to see your there to meet his needs. Sounds like a great relationship to me, just meet his needs before you hold him and all sounds great. I would suggest feeding tongs with his guy.

Blue Tegu Ya i guess i never really looked at it like that. He is very consitant with eating every other day he gets a gerbil or 2. I cant wait till he is full grown to he is only 7 months old now. And ya i need to get some tongs i just kinda throw food in there and he hits it before its on the ground lol.

Blue Tegu From the pics you posted it seems he/she is fed in his cage. This can and often leads to "cage aggression". The cage is opened and your tegu thinks "food". If your feeding in cage I suggest you stop and feed in separate area outside cage. If you are feeding live rodents, again I suggest only feed pre-killed rodents outside cage. All feeding should be outside his enclosure. If you are nervous about reaching in to hold him, start by taking your shirt off (it smells like you) and touch your tegu gently with it, let him smell it and Know it is not food. Do this a few times before you use your hand to pick him up. To start feeding him outside the cage and get him out, try leaving the door open with the food in a dish near the cage. He may come out on his own to find the food. If you are concerned about being bitten, wear gloves at first to get him out and to his food. Over time, your tegu will realize that when the cage is opened it doesn’t mean time to get food aggressive. Hope this helped

Blue Tegu Get yourself a couple plastic trays ( I use sterilite ) and for feeding times just open the door and place a tray with the food in. You may have to move the tegu to it a few times until it gets used to the idea.
I find keeping its attention with one hand and grabbing the base of the tail with the other is easy and fast way to lift the animal safely to show the food in the tray.
This method works with all 5 of my current tegus and 1 sav monitor.
