Just bought a Golden tegu, need some help.

I just bought it back, and i started off to feed it with some chicken and water, and it is about 40cm long from head to tail. is it an adult??

Also how can i manage to handle it more easily. How can I tame it well. really need some advice .

Thanks

Do you mean inches?? Columbians get to be around 3-3.5 feet in total length. If your gold is not tame by now you will have your work cut out for you but it can be done. You need to give her some time to get used to her new home. During this time try to "tidy" her homestead by changing her water, spot cleaning etc do what she will let you do but dont push her now. Columbians tend to be more skittish then argentine’s so that is what makes it a bit harder. You may want to wear welding gloves for now to avoid you pulling back if she does go for you. Set up a routine, and be consistant. Avoid live food, and avoid the gold seeing you put food in the enclosure. Some don’t feed in the enclosure and instead take the tegu out to feed. I feed in the enclosure but on slate tile to avoid substrate ingestion. When you do think she has settled in start getting her out each day and offer a "safe" place. I used to take by tegu into the bathroom and let him roam, I would sit on the grount and play around on my laptop. This way she can check you out on her terms and not your. I would do this each day, you can also use this time to offer her a nice warm bath every other day or so.

It will take time but I know alot of people with very tame columbians, even more so then their Argentine tegus!! Keep us posted on how it is going.

I have a Golden B&G also :)

Chicken gizzards, ground turkey, mice/pinky rats, meal worms, dubia, ect. Make sure you have a calcium supp. as well

Advice: Don’t mess with her until she’s ready. Don’t dig her out when she’s burrowed. When you do take her out, take her out where she won’t hide under something you can’t move. Lol

I’ve been trying the shirt-with-my-scent on it idea but im tired of doing laundry.

I take my tegu and stick her in my shirt now. It’s gonna take a while. Mine has good days and bad days where she either wants to come out or dispises the sight of me.

Thanks a lot both Vanessa and Dotz , btw, do they drink much. Mine doesn’t seem to drink much. Do i have to change the water everyday.

Besides, it ate a lot . however it open its mouth and touge pretty often even tough i just feed her few minutes ago.

Are these normal behaviours?
How long should i wait before the 1st time of handling ??

Tazia didn’t start drinking til the 3rd day I had her, then she drank alot.

Yeah change the water every day, put a big enough water container in her cage that she can wade in it.
If your tegu is opening her mouth when you go by her, that means she wants you to leave her alone.
If she’s just opening it and sticking her tongue out she could be dehydrated, make sure you mist her to keep the humidity. 65-80 is what I keep mine at.

Or hungry! I feed mine twice aday. They eat a tonnn!

I take mine out twice aday to eat but holding wise, I didn’t take her out to explore for about 4 days.

I would offer a type of water dish that is a bit more shallow but larger for the tegu to get her whole body in to soak. If you are feeding meats that do not contain bone then yes you do need to add calcium. Whole prey items are a great source of calcium and other nutrients...rodents, chicks, chopped chicken necks are all good sources of both protein and calcium. Make sure you offer variety in your tegus diet, you don’t want her to become dependent on one food source.
