 FBT with Eye Inflammation!

One of my FBT’s has an eye problem. They seem puffy and have a film over them. He keeps swiping at them so I know its bothering him. Is there any treatment for such?

How often do you change their water? Do you chlorinate it?

Correction: Do you dechlorinate the water?

Yes, water treated for chlorine and chloramines. Its only one eye and the other FBT is fine. He’s sensitive to light as well.

Is it changed every day? I’ve heard of this happening twice. One was from a person on this board and it was because she forgot to change the water. Once she kept doing it the toad went back to normal. The second person was from a different site. She wasn’t told to change the water until I told her to and by then it was too late...the toad became blind.

I’ve got a filter. The tank is aquatic with an island covering about a third of the surface area. The filter is new,got it last week.Could that be something? Bacterial ? Or could it be an injury? He keeps blinking and wiping at his eye. When the UV light is on he hides under the island, like a vampire toad.

That might be part of the problem..... FBTs DO NOT require any additional lighting. They do best with natural light. If you have live plants (I do) you can use a fluorescent to help them grow. If you do use it make sure they have 12 hours on and 12 hours off (mine is hooked up to a timer).

And if that’s not it, maybe he’s hiding because the light is bothering his eyes. Like how bright light bothers people with migrains. I don’t think it could be the filter because I also have one.

I would keep the light off for a few days. If he is with others put him in a separate tank so they don’t get infected. If there are no others, keep the light off and out of any sunlight. From what I’ve read, being in the dark helps their body go into healing mode.

One last thing I’ll throw out there is shedding. Have you seen or noticed any part of him shedding? I’m thinking maybe there’s a piece bothering him like an eyelash would irritate our eyes.

If I think of anymore I’ll let you know. Keep us posted. Definitely try keeping the light off.

Guess what? He had a bad shed! Today he was covered in what looked like mucous, then he shed it off and now he looks fine! He’s even barking at his mate again. No UV lighting necassary? Thats the exact opposite I was told when I purchased them.Just to sell a light eh? Well anyway, he’s good as new!

I’m very happy for you and the little one!

Save the UV lighting for some other animal you may want later. The UV lighting can dry out their skin very quickly and do more damage than good. The reason I got them was due to the fact that they didn’t need additional lighting. Pet stores don’t always know what is right. For instance, my very reputable local pet store thought FBT had tongues and didn’t know captive FBTs still can emit poison from their glands. I would have trusted everything he said but now when he gives me info I tell him I’m going to do research first. He laughs and tells me to come back with the "real" answer.

I just found out (thanks to the new issue of Reptiles magazine) that the supposed "Southern toad" I purchased from a very reputable reptile dealer was actually a European green toad. I even named her "Dixie" ! Maybe she’s from "southern" Europe?

LOL! Maybe. Like I said, you can’t always trust those professionals to know what they are doing or talking about.
