 Obesity??

I’ve been feeding my American toad about 5 crickets per day and he eats them all, none are left in the tank. There’s no sign of him having parasites or anything, and I can’t tell if he’s just bloating himself up. Is it possible for American Toads to be obese? Should I shorten him down on food? Someone please help me.I’m usually in the iguanas and anole forums so I haven’t kept up with the toad forums but I will check back everyday.
Also, I’ve heard that to sex a toad, males have darker throats. Is that true? If not, how do you sex a toad?

 Obesity??

It depends on how big the toad and the crickets are.

If you’re feeding every day and getting stools about as often, then dramatic weight gain may be obesity. Otherwise, and more likely, it’s just plain-old gorge-bloating. If they have more wings and legs in them than they can pass efficiently, then other stuff gets built up behind it and they swell up.

If it’s the first, then just try slowing down a little. I wouldn’t say go from 5 a day to 5 every other day. I would say try 3 a day, but still let the toad have that dailly pleasure. If three turns out to be too much, you can try 2 a day, or even one. Seriously, I’ve got a toad that thrives on one individual roach a day. The size of the bugs plus the size of the toad, it just works out perfectly with her.

If it’s the second, then cutting down on meals might be the answer. The answer might also be better hydration, (slightly) warmer temperature, or a more varied diet that includes easier-to-digest things than crickets. Don’t get me wrong, crickets are a much better staple than worms, but you might find that a trout worm or two a week helps keep all those cricket shells passing through on schedule.

It feels like he’s just bloating but I don’t want to have him get hurt so I’ll start cutting him down to at least 3 a day instead of five starting today.I usually let him swim around in my tub twice a day but he’s got a shallow pool in his cage also.
I’ve fed him a couple of earthworms before, are those okay?

yes those are fine. does the water come from your tap? do you let it st a day before putting him in it?
if you dont the the clorin (sorry me spelling) could make him bloated.

Alright, thank you.I switched out his water about two hours ago and he’s been sitting in it ever since. It’s kind of warm since it’s been under the tank but he seems to really enjoy it.And I switched my anole and house gecko’s water out just in case and this is the first time I’ve seen it but I actually saw one of my geckos drinking from the bowl!!! Lol I know that’s off topic but I’ve never heard of small lizards drinking from a bowl. :D
