Advice On My Fire Bellied Toad Set Up (Is "testra aqua: aqua safe" safe???)

Hi guys.
I’m a first time own of fire bellied toads, ill be getting them in a few days time.

My tank arrived, with some cool freebies, im not sure if i should use them though, ever heard of Tetra Aqua Aqua Safe? its to make the water safer for "tropical fish" .... but do you think i should still use it even though my tank is for toads?

Also, i have Tetra Aqua Easy Balance to "reduce frequent water changes and to keep water fresh"

I also got some free fish flakes - someone told me to feed them to my crickets along side fruit etc so my frogs can get lots of good nutrients.

Opinions??

Also, should i be using my garden pebbles as rocks for them?? i cleaned them and scrubbed them with boiling hot water first.
And what about an empty coconut shell that has also been cleaned with hot water and scrubbed as a hide out? im trying to be economic. I’ve got gravel from a pet store.

Thats all im worried about... i know mostly everything else.

don’t use gravel, it can cause inpaction if ingested. and a coconut shell would be fine. you could use gravel if you covered it in moss.

Go for the pebbles which you’ve cleaned correctly. I also use rocks from my yard. Avoid gravel as much a possible. I know some people say you can use it and then cover it up with something else but unless they have really well behaved toads that’s not going to happen. When these guys move around they’ll destroy anything in their path. I had gravel which they managed to bring onto the land. How they did that I have no idea. I also had moss on the land which they brought into the water making it pretty icky

The Aqua Safe stuff I’d keep for the fish. You are better off getting an underwater filter. Fluval Stage 1 works best if you have up to 12 gallons of water. They have 3 stages depending on how much water you have. It cost me about $14, is very quiet, and easy to clean.

The fish food is great for the crickets which in turn helps the toads maintain their bright underbellies. Make sure you dust the crickets once or twice a week at feeding.

Hope this helps! Enjoy them! They are great to watch and you’ll soon see personalities in them!

well, when i say gravel i guess i mean VERY BIG gravel about half an inch in size??? i doubt that will cause impactation as they wouldnt be able to fit it in their mouths.... i cant think of using anything else because its basically an aquarium, its 50/50 water, if i put anything else in it would mix with the water and look gross.

hmm, maybe i should just use fresh spring water then and change it every week. because i cant find what filter you mean

Link

which one of these is it???

This is it link

These toads will swallow anything they can fit in their mouth. Mine can eat a cricket that is an inch long and a 2 inch Caterpillar. I’ve even caught them trying to eat one of their companions. He had his head and two front limbs in his mouth. I had to actually separate them. Luckily, they don’t do that anymore.

Not to hijack this post, but Keecho.. do you have just a sponge in your fluval 1?

I used to have just the $5 plastic airpump filter with one side sponge, other side charcoal... but recently bought a fluval 1 filter instead.. The water gets kinda yellow and doesn’t clear out, even when I change the water.. Do you have this problem?

Yes, I have a sponge and no, I never had that problem. Maybe it’s because I only use spring water? I also have the Fluval 2 in my ACF tank and never had a problem with the water turning yellow.
