 Toad with broken leg

The day before yesterday my dad hit a small toad(just bigger than a quarter) with a weed wacker. The toad is most likely an american, but could be a fowler’s. The toad was stunned at first, but quickly recovered. One of its front legs appears to be broken. The wound was bleeding and I could see bone or maybe muscle. The leg seems to be well attached, but there were times where it was in very unnatural looking positions. I’m not sure if the toad has any internal injuries. The toad has pooped two times, but I didn’t notice any blood.

At first I put the toad in a container with soil, but dirt ended up getting in the wound. After washing the wound as best I could, I replaced the substrate with pieces of paper towel. It also has a very shallow water dish. I’ve kept european green toads in the past, but that was over 5 years ago.

What I would like to know is if I should treat the wound in any way. I’ve been tempted to try hydrogen peroxide, but didn’t know if it was safe for toads. Today the toad is clutching the leg against its chest. I tried to feed him some small pillbugs, but he didn’t show any interest.

Thanks. I tried another forum, but have not gotten any replies.

take the poor toad to the vet. I wouldn’t use hydrogen peroxide, it stings us and amphibians have really sensitive skin, it would kill them. I would tank it to the vet as soo nas possible. And you might have to keep the toad in captivity, if you release it back into the wild the chances are it won’t make it.

I highly doubt hydrogen peroxide is safe for a toad’s skin. I would suggest calling your local wild life vet/reserve for help and information.

Thanks, thats why I didn’t try it. I honestly know nothing about treating small animal wounds, so that is why I asked. I didn’t want to hurt the toad or anything like that. I’ll call around, but I don’t think the vets in my area deal with amphibians.

For in case I can’t find help, can anyone tell me if I should treat the wound and what kind of med they would recommend?

I’d try fish antibiotics, unless somebody has a better idea.

Every state has an Animal Wildlife Center. You can find them through your state’s website or in the phonebook. Every time I needed mine they were very helpful, call me to give updates if I wanted, and did not require a fee. You can also call them and ask what to do because they have vets that pretty much know how to treat everything and if they don’t they know someone who does.

I’ll check into that Keechoo. I think I have the wound covered, but am not too sure what to do with the broken leg. So far he seems to have no trouble moving and catching food.

Based on advise from another board I have been using plain neosporin. The wound was red at first, but is starting to look pinker.

The toad has eaten at least two small crickets, that I have witnessed.

I forgot to mention that I moved the toad to a 10 gal on Saturday. Since he can’t burrow in the towels, I modified some clay flower pots for hiding places. I sanded the sharp edges on the pots smooth.

Sorry about the multiple postings

JackAsp, I’m not sure what kind of antibiotics you are talking about. I keep fish and most of the antibiotics I see at petstores are either edible(by Jungle) or added to the water(melafix, disolving tablets, etc).

I was talking about dissolving some Melafix or something like that. But it sounds like things are progressing decently with the Neosporn.

About the same as yesterday. For the past couple of days he has been hiding constantly. The only times I see him are when I lift up the pots to mist or when I treat the wound. I know it isn’t because he is being nocturnal, because I usually don’t go to sleep until 4am.

He is acting less active. When I lift up a pot he doesn’t jump away like he used to. He still has an interest in food though. When I misted this morning, I also added a few crickets. He tried to get one, but it was too quick for him.

Keechoo, all I could find was the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environmental Quality. I’ll try contacting the D.N.R., because they regulate the harvesting of reptiles and amphibians. From past experience, I know they have a fish biologist that you can talk to. I know there are some wildlife rehibilitation centers in Michigan, but the one I have seen is on the other side of the state. I’ll try to find their name.

As a side note: I’m not sure if you are all aware of this, but many states have laws on the collecting of reptiles and amphibians. Michigan for example regulates everything, including toads. For toads the season is the last saturday in May to November 15th. The possession limit is 10. Snapping turtles and softshell turtles are probably the only species my state takes seriously though. I doubt you would be bothered, but if you haven’t, you might still want to check your state’s fishing guide.

It isn’t againt the law as long as you follow the rules. Tell her to turn to page 9 in the 2008 fishing guide. As I said, they rarely enforce it though. Snapping turtles, softshell turtles, and some frogs are basicly the only ones that people eat. There is also a listing of proctected species(Blandings turtle, eastern fox snakes, smallmouth salamanders, etc) that you can’t possess at all. Just thought I would mention this, because I’ve read some posts where people collect wild herps. I’ve been to other states that had laws, but I’m not sure which ones(reason why you might want to check your states fishing guide).

Here is an online version of the laws Link

Thanks again Keechoo
