Sorry to go off on everyone, but that is not an American toad. Please learn that toads have ranges, and the American Toad is not found in California. Everytime someone from California posts on here, they get the wrong ID, and its just not right. If you aren’t familiar with the locations species, don’t post about them simply from looking at a photo.


Anyways. The species you have is Bufo Boreas Halophilus. I personally own two. If you intend to keep him, be prepared to spend a lot on food.

when you say bufo boreas halophilus, do you mean a western toad? if you do I agree with you, it is a western toad.

I’m not a fan of common names, but all toads belonging to b. boreas are often refered to as western toads. To be a little bit more specific, this species is more commonly called the Southern California Toad.

I don’t guarantee that I will be completely nice when people don’t even bother to read previous posts or they talk about species and locations they are not familiar with. I once tolerated it, but I’ve seen it too much and it is rather annoying.

Cognatus does not extend into Los Angeles county. Cognatus is also characterized by large splotches that do not extend to the abdomen and the presence of cranial crests. Halophilus lacks cranial crests and has splotches that extend to the abdomen. This toad is without a doubt bufo boreas halophilus; a common inhabitant of Los Angeles county.

Hi, My bf found one just like this today, some people were going to throw him out side of his work....so my bf ran right up to them and grabbed this little guy (Hip E. Hop) and now he has his own cage. By the way we live in Iowa and he looks exactly the same, hehe. Good to know what he is.

If you live in Iowa, you do not own this species of toad. You most likely have an American Toad.

If anyone owes anyone an apology, it is you. You accuse me of being wrong when it is clear you never even bothered to actually read the information in those posts. Instead, since you so clearly want to start an argument, you did not bother to read anything regarding bufo boreas halophilus.

The toad in question IS NOT an American Toad. How am I so positive? Bufo americanus is not a native species to California, nor a native to surrounding states. Bufo americanus is not even an established introduced species. No bufo americanus are found in California. Now, how did I narrow this toad down to bufo boreas halophilus? This toad was found in Los Angeles county, no other species of toads found in Los Angeles county resemble bufo boreas halophilus. Want more? Ok. This toad does not appear to have any cranial crests, which is a characteristic of bufor boreas halophilus. This toad also has spotting that extends to the abdomen, yet another characteristic of bufo boreas halophilus.

You know, its a real shame that you, a fellow California resident, does not even recognizes the states species or carry enough common sense to know that bufo americanus is primarily found on the east coast. Yes, my posts in this topic may be a bit harsh, but I’m sick of people like you. You come on here and argue about something that is so obviously false. So tell me, why do you feel a non-native, eastern species of toad has shown up in Los Angeles county?

Stop being a hypocrite. Get your facts right before posting.

Oh my god! I didn’t type that! I bet you it was my cousin. Whenever he comes over after school I am always on this site, so he gets really mad at me, and i bet you he trashed this site. He has done it before on the Hermit Crab forums... I am very sorry for my cousin’s stupidity. Is there any way we can get over this because it is really stupid, and Prince Sushi, you give some of the best advice on this forum. I am very sorry.
