 Is my FBT sick??

Hey all!

We’re new owners to 2 little fire bellied toads. We have them set up in a 10 gallon tank. Our little guys are already spoiled rotten! They’re all set up with plenty of artificial foilage medium sized pebbles as substrate in our 10 gallon tank. We’ve been feeding them 2-3 crickets each daily, since they’re still juveniles. The tank temp has been about 80 degrees. We live in AZ so its hard to get it to be much cooler than that even with it being indoors.

I’m concerned about one of our little guys: he decided to take a little adventure over this weekend and escaped from his tank (shame on us for letting it happen!) I felt aweful about it, he seemed to have a rough time after we found him in the closet and got him back to his home. His skin got very dark and he was very listless but since he’s been active and his color brightened up.

We just cleaned the cage today. I checked on them about an hour ago and they were bright and active, but i just checked again, and his bright color is dull again. He’s very dark green and much slimier than normal. IS HE OKAY? IS THIS NORMAL?

I also just got a little white’s frog who isn’t eating. He caught a cricket earlier but looked like he was choking on it or something and he used his front legs to literally grab it out from the back of his throat. How dangerous is it to have him with our FBT’s? Will they really kill him? The guy at the pet store said they were fine to live together.

Also-- how should we clean the tank? We’ve been emptying everything out and rinsing it down with tap water weekly then of course replacing everything in the tank with distilled water. Is this the way to do it? Should we be using bleach or any special cleaners for the tank or just plain water?

Well, first of all i’m not sure about a white tree frog and what it’s needs are, but it should not be with the FBT’s. FBT’s have a toxin that will kill other species. I would remove it and put it in another tank.

I also sent my previous note too quick. You might put a fan near the tank and let it blow on it, or get a fan for on top of the tank. That would help with the cooling. As for cleaing the tank, don’t use any soaps or bleach, hot water is good. As far as weekly cleaning goes, how much water is in your tank? I have a 55 gal tank that I have approx 3 inches of water in the tank, enough water to use a filter that sits on it’s side. I then do 25% changes every few weeks, but spot clean the poop a few times a week, but I have 6 of them in 1 tank so it can get nasty! haha! SO, if you have enough water for a filter, then I would get a small filter. It’s much easier, and less stressful on the FBT’s! I do a full tank clean out about every 6-8 weeks, where I hot water all the stones/plants/hideaways things like that.

Hope this helps.

The color change is ok. They do that. One of mine has been dark for over a year and he finally came back to the original color.

Don’t use distilled water as it can make them sick or kill them. Use dechlorinated tap water or spring water.

Everything else was already said by Linda so no need to go on.

Good luck!

Thanks all for your reply! We have a filter. There’s about 3 inches of water. Seems like you can find any answer you want on the internet-- a lot of posts say that people house WTF and FBT’s together just fine. But then again the same number of posts are out there that say one will kill the other. They need the same humidity and temperature levels, live in the same environment and eat the same things. I think i’ll give it a shot and keep a close eye on the lil guys. Its been about 2 weeks now and everyone is doing great!! Little Abe is bright green again today so i think he’s okay :)

What about my WTF having trouble eating that cricket though?? Any suggestions?

What size crickets are you using? I was giving my FBT’s medium’s and they couldn’t eat them, they choked on them, I only feed them small and it’s much better. Maybe the white frog needs small ones? Not sure. I would go and get a filter then for the tank since you have that much water. It’ll make a big difference, and won’t be so much work to clean, as Keecho said, make sure you decholrinate the water.
