 Questions...

Hi every1!
I just had a few questions & would greatly appreciate anyone opinions or advice. Last night I found a toad on my carport & I really wanted to take him in & keep him but I didn’t want to risk his life, as I am un-sure what kind of toad he is or what his needs would be. I was looking at a post on here that shows a few diff kinds of toads & to me, it looked like he/she could be a Bufo Cognatus? The toad was not brown or green...more like a tan or lighter color, no stripe in the middle of his back, had some warts, his belly was white, was really tiny & had really cute bug eyes. lol! I have been searching on the net trying to find out what kind of toads are in Maryland, (as that’s where I am from) but I don’t see this particular toad on any of the lists. Maybe he looks diff cuz he is a baby? I guess my questions would be...do toads pretty much need the same needs/requirements as far as water, heat, lighting, food? Or do I need to find out what particular toad this is before I can catch one & keep him? I am a huge animal lover & would feel awful If I tried to give him a home & he ended up dying. So...what do you guys/gals think? Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions...

~Sandy

Sounds like a baby since you said he had big eyes. They don’t need heating so no worries about that. I would provide a water bowl and feed live insects/bugs especially crickets and some worms. Try to get a picture up if you can as I’m sure someone will be able to identify it for you.

 Questions...

Thx Keechoo, 4 getting back to me.

I actually let him go because I didn’t want to put his life in danger but I would like to buy a tank & set up a home for one & possibly try to catch another & keep him:) What about hibernation periods? Will he be ok during that period & just skip hibernation or will he just bury himself in the substrate & sleep for a while? A the same as far as what needs they have & how to care for them? I searched on line trying to figure out what kind of toad he is but none of the toads found in Maryland looked like him. Maybe it’s because he was a baby. Thanks again:)

Usually toads in captivity don’t go into hibernation unless you mimic the conditions pretty much exactly. Other toads, seem to do so all on their own. Like I said, it most likely was a baby and was pictured on the Maryland website as an adult.

You’re welcome!
