Help setting up a Toad tank
1. Can I get a second toad to keep with him in there? Same type of toad, hopefully of the opposite gender. 2. When i have the glass cut I plan to measure the inside dimension of the glass. How much of that measurement should I shave off to allow room to seal the glass in? 3. I should use aquarium sealant correct? 4. What kind of substrate should be used? I have aquarium gravel in with him now. 5. How often should I change the water? It will be unfiltered and I have some minnows living with him so i don’t want to kill them with his toxicity. So far so good, I have been doing a 75% water change every other day. 6. What should I include in this habitat? What should I avoid including? Thanks! |

2 -no idea 3 - yes 4 - nothing that he can swallow. Aquarium gravel is too small and can cause impaction or death. I use large river rocks and rocks found in my yard. Some use moss which I did but I found they carried it into the water and turned it all yucky. You can use pretty much anything as long as they can’t swallow it and it won’t hurt their bellies. 5 - Filter is best because you wouldn’t have to change the water everyday. You should be giving a full water change every day but 75% is better than nothing. Also, just so you know their toxins can kill themselves. You might see them going blind, swimming in circles, etc and that would be your first clue that the water is killing them. 6 - Hides, lots and lots of plants in and/or out of the water, humidity and temperature guage. My water is like a swamp which they love but there are some areas that are free so they can free swim. Never anything they can swallow. Hope this helps some. |

My toad hasnt eaten since MONDAY (only 1 cricket) because the pet stores shipment didn’t come in, I even tried traveling across state line for some last night but they were out too! But I am going in about an hour to get some, they have them now. I am also buying some cricket food to fortify the bugs and I will be keeping the crickets in the Planet Frog enclosure that the toad was gievn to us in. I plan to keep some apple in there for the crickets, I hear thats OK? I ended up scrapping the glass divider idea for now and put a floating (anchored) island inside and a tree stump thing, its mostly submerged, but I will get more gravel (the large kind) today to remedy that. The water is about 3-4 inches deep and I bought some plastic floating plants that the toad seems to enjoy. I also bought a common houseplant, no name on it... but I want to put it in there but I have concerns about the soil its in, so I don’t know what I should do. I am NOT good with live plants, animals and children i am good with but live plants not so much. I have an avocado plant sprouting, would it be ok to plant that in the tank? Currently the tank is about 3/5 water, but I am going to add a little more land today. I will be putting a pump in for a waterfall in the near future ($$$) and a filter as well, but it may have to wait a week or so. I will just keep cleaning the water, that is why I have so much in there for now. I have 3 minnows in there that i caught in the lake, the toad is not interested in them but I kinda figured if the water was becoming toxic they would die first and they are doing amazingly well. Also, the tank water seems to be staying about 70 degrees right now, is that OK? veryone in there seems happy. Oh for the water change, i have been draining about 75%, then adding a bit more, then draining again, then filling back up, so its getting flushed with each change as well. I can’t drain it all at once due to the minnows. My toad doesn’t make any noise, I am guessing she’s a female so I am hoping to get her a male today :) |

Also, I’d recommend getting live moss (not spaghnum)... It’s really easy to maintain, and provides a cozy resting spot for the toads |
