Ive heard of those cane toads in Florida. Of course you do know that they are not supposed to be there. so They can live anywhere, any tank with food small enough to fit in its mouth.

Nothing can survive anywhere forever. It will survive in a larger enclosure much longer than it would in a 20, though. If a decent-sized adult jumped one time in that thing it would smash its face into the glass. You might get lucky with a male and wind up with a little three incher who just never gets any bigger than that for genetic reasons. But don’t count on it. Even males often exceed four inches, and when you take into account leg spread that’s a much bigger toad than it sounds like, especially when it wants to move. A twenty is an okay thing to start babies in, but most people suggest a least a 40 for adults. Mine’s not even five and half inches, and is not remotely impressed with the size of her 150-gallon stock tank.
Funny thing about cane toads. Everybody talks about how easy to keep they are, but when you start looking for people who’ve had theirs for more than a few years, the room gets really quiet.

Mine did always run into the glass too but I manage to get him to calm down. I keep him in a 5.5 for now since the elctricity bill can get high for a bigger tank and he likes it. By the way Jack thanks for the info on what to feed my cane toad, but the main factor I was missing was heat. Do you have any pics of your toad to show me. I just have mine in that little tank and he is pretty calm and happy. His water bowl takes up a quarter of the tankbut no hiding spot...... I am trying to get him to calm down and get used to me and know when I am about to feed him. There is a guy on youtube that just walks out and feeds his toads like chickens and they are pretty calm. By the way I am from Barbados and cane toads are everywhere. Sad to say they weren’t my best animal and so they got alot of torture when I found them but they survived. I love them alot now, they are regal looking creatures

A 5.5 gallon tank? Seems improbable that he likes it. But he eats better in it? What temp are you keeping him at?
I do envy those people who have outdoor tame ones, but if you get one that’s been captured it’s going to come with some pretty strong anti-human baggage. I assume they’re a lot tamer if you just walk outside, catch one, and pout it in a tub yourself than if it’s been going from original capturer to guy that knows wholesaler, to wholesaler, to local dealer, to new home... mine won’t even let me watch her eat.
This is mine back when I had her in that clamshell thing I made out of kiddie pools.

Right now I’m trying something longer, but with a little less square inchage. Hard to say which is actually better in the long run. This pic isn’t up to date; I’ve added more plants and rearranged things a bit and currently have an incadecent light fixture rigged over it, and the spahgnum is now deeper because as you get higher up there’s more floorspace, but the container I’m currently using is here:

O yeah man, mine eats whatever moves in his/her space. The tank is kept up to 80-82 with a 50 watt incandescent moonlight blue bulb. screen on top with foil to trap the heat. He is probably only half the length of that dollar and hasnt put out any toxin since I had him, even through the rough force feeding of pinkies I had to give him to keep him from dying earlier when I asked you for help. I will have to try some of those worms you mentioned in the ealier post to gain more weight. I can,t wait till those back bones dissapear now. Your toad looks really nice man Later!

Mine’s never squirted either. Considering how much stress most of them will endure without ever doing it, I can’t help wondering if maybe it’s a genetic thing, like being able to wiggle your ears. I mean, technically, they don’t NEED to be able to squirt poison on their own anyway, against most enemies. If a dog or soemthing bites them, it’ll be scraping or piercing the glands anyway. The squirt might be a relatively recent development that some of them have evolved over the last few thousand years, specifically to deal with humans, but if it’s recessive or if it’s linked to something that’s less advantageous, I suppose that would explain why most of them don’t do it.
They sure can pee though!

This is a very old thread, but I’ll answer your question. Most likely there are not regulations in New Jersey about cane toads, but each state varies on the regulations so check before you buy.
