Apparently I forgot to turn on my toads’ heater.

And they realized that it’s spring.

I guess I’m performing a froggy abortion tomorrow.

Valid choice. I mean, breeding is great if you actually have something to DO with the offspring, but if nobody really wants them except Petco, then... yeah.

Yeah, especially if you have a BUNCH of babies.

That would not be good.

Ugh. Apparently I didn’t get all of the eggs.

I scooped these guys out earlier today. There’s at least one more left in the tank.

Ms. Vicky,

I have set up a fire-bellied toad vivarium over the past month for a local adults-with-disabilities daycare and continued education center. I am in the process of setting up a second tank for my own personal use. The tank I made is perfect for 4-5 toads, and I plan on having another half-dozen at my house.

Any suggestions for simulating proper seasonal fluctuations in my vivariums? I bred chameleons and bearded dragons back in middle-school and high-school with the help of my parents. I think I "caught the herp-bug again." I want to try breeding and rearing reptiles and amphibians again. I know I could find enough homes for my creatures across campus. I could probably sell them for $2-3 dollars as a fundraiser for an organization on campus.

Also, if you find eggs in your tank again, consider mailing the eggs! I would love to raise tadpoles, and though I plan on keeping colonies of RB-toads together, I doubt I’ll have (fast) success with breeding them.

Seems like your doing some things right with your toads. Do you have live aquatic plants in with them?

-Z

Honestly, I don’t really have any suggestions. I spent years suppressing their breeding behavior by keeping their temperatures in the 70s all year long. Then, after a tank cleaning, I forgot to plug their heater back in, and after only two weeks of cooler temperatures, the first batch of eggs appeared. Within a month’s time, they bred twice more. I finally ended up removing all submerged and semi submerged plants from my vivarium to prevent a fourth breeding.

I keep my main tank at ratio of about 2/3 land (very coarse aquarium gravel, much too large to be ingested) to 1/3 water with silk aquarium plants and pieces of driftwood to provide cover. Most people suggest keeping the land section only sparsely planted, but my toads - especially the females, when they need to get away from the over eager males - seem to like heavy cover.

I really don’t recommend breeding them. The females will lay between 40-200 eggs each breeding and can breed several times in a single season. I have invested a great deal of time and money in raising the eight tadpoles I ended up with, I can’t imagine trying to do so for hundreds of them at a time. And my babies are just entering the toadlet phase (about half of them have reached that stage so far) and now the work and expense really begins because they are now at their most delicate.

omg! do they have little bright bellies like their parents!? I know all of the work in raising tadpoles. It is very hard to do, but I have only raised fowler’s toad tadpoles. Good luck!

Apparently I forgot to turn on my toads’ heater.

I have 3 FBT and I believe 2 are males and 1 is female. Now she has no problem getting them off of her when she’s not in the "mood". But I do always hear them doing the dirty, and I catch them offten, But I have never found eggs. The tank stays between 73-78, but it does drop sometimes on cooler nights to the mid 60’s. But that should not be a problem anymore now that its summer time. Ok so now my question: How come I didnt have any eggs this past winter? And is there any ill effects to her not laying eggs? I know some with some animals they will rott inside of a mother if they do not get laid.
Thanks for any info on this!

Again, I can’t really make recommendations about breeding, since I was not trying to breed mine. My females went years without breeding and seemed to have no ill effects.

Sadly, two of my toadlets did not develop properly. Their front legs turned out deformed and non-functional. As a result, they were not able to compete with their siblings and died on 4/19. The remaining six are doing well and becoming quite adept little hunters but have not yet developed their bright colors. I was unable to find suitable live prey that naturally contain the beta carotene needed for the colors, so I have purchased some pinhead crickets and have been gut-loading them with carrots and crushed fish food. I am hopeful that this will be sufficient for color development.
