Put it back. 1) Taking animals from the wild is never advisable; they can becomes very stressed living in captivity to the point of death; they can be riddled with internal and external parasites, some of witch can be passed to humans. 2) If you are not willing to handle "bugs" then you certainly won’t be feeding it and it will die. That’s all that most amphibians eat is "bugs."

If you want a toad or amphibian of some kind, do your research on witch one you want, find a reputable breeder in your area, and buy one.

not trying to disagree or anything, but i do. where do you think ppl first got taods/frogs? it is not like they came with them thro the womb! yah they got them from the wild! so it is perfectly fine to find a toad/frog and keep it as your pet. it will not harm it if you are careful and resposible with it. you use the least stressful methoids there are and you are fine. you need to just keep in mine they are wild and man handling them is a lil stressful at frist but they get used to it. i would not worry about it.

and yes if you are attached to him you may keep him. you will just need to learn how to not be afread of bugs. like you could start with the most simple of bugs like pill bugs, warms, or grass hoppers.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Many frogs in the pet stores are caught from the wild. It is up to you and your conception of ethics weather you agree with this sort of thing. There are many different angles to look at it and each has its own good and bad points.

However, there are an increasing number of frogs and toads that are being bred in captivity and are more suited for a domesticated life. While I won’t say you shouldn’t catch a toad and keep it, I will say that if you don’t know how to care for it and you do that, then that isn’t very responsible. Your lack of knowledge, money, and willingness to handle simple food items for it could prove fatal.

Thank you Sh0e, my sentiments exactly.

And, yes, I know that animals didn’t just pop into existence, but, it’s the thousands of people with your mentality, blue eyed cutie, that all think that taking whatever animals they like from the wild is OK, and eventually all of that selfishness ends up putting those very same animals on the endangered species list. There are plenty of breeders out there that can keep wild populations wild and intact, and give you what you want at the same time.

There’s a big difference too, between buying a wild caught pet, and acquiring WC animals to try to establish a captive bred population. One I find ethical, one I don’t personally agree with. Sadly the number of amphibian species is dropping due to habitat destruction, pollution, invasive species, and yes, harvesting them for the pet trade. The small Pearl Danio discovered a few years ago was so drastically harvested that it was thought that they had become extinct. New populations have been discovered, but it was a scary moment.

There are good reasons to buy and collect wild animals, there are selfish reasons, and there is plain ignorance.

In this case I think it was the best thing for the animal.

If you want a cute pet that doesn’t eat bugs check out crested geckos. They can eat baby food and crested gecko diet. Plus as a gecko they tolerate handling much better. Doesn’t mean it won’t stress them out still, but if done slowly they won’t really mind it.

There are also reptiles that don’t need to be fed bugs. Reptiles that are herbivores, like the Mali Uromastyx or most tortoise species, could be a better fit for you as well, especially if you’re not into bugs.

I’m glad that you let the little guy go. :)
