Is this tank big enough? My toad is in the picture. It’s a 15 gallon.

Size is fine. What are you using for substrate?

I’d also remove the dried spagnum. Bugs can hide in it and toads can swallow it and become impacted.

I’m using sand for substrate, and aquarium rocks, half dusted in sand too.

Sand isn’t good for toads, I’ve heared they could swallow and become imapcted with it. Rocks are ok, as long as they are bigger than the toad’s head.

Sand: depends on the toad. Some like it dry, so sand is a suitable substrate, others prefer humidity so sand isn’t really acceptable. The small rocks are a fatality waiting to be swallowed. Do you know what kind of toad it is?

remove the rocks. I would use a sand and coco fiber bedding mix.

Hello, It’s been a while since i’ve been here, but i think im back. If you Want, Please look at my Care sheet which is the top rated care sheet for American Toads. You can get your information there, as well as from people on this forum. I would also look around at some other sites and see whats going on.

- I do 10gl tank for 1 American Toad, and you add 5gl for ever other frog you get. A Big enough water bowl for them to get in, but not deep enough to drowned them. Rule of thumb for water bowls is, " If the water is over there throat when they sit in it, it’s to deep". Just deep enough for them to get in and soak up some water. Never make it deeper then there throat.

- Rocks are Bad. Can lead to impaction and it’s bad for there body, and them, themselves. Eco-Earth or Co-Co fiber ( Same thing ) is there best thing to use. Other substrate you can use would be things like: organic Peat Moss, organic Potting Soil, Paper Towls. I would do the Co-Co fiber mixed with a little organic Peat Moss. Also some Terrarium moss is nice looking in there to. I would make it about 3-4 inches deep for borrowing.

- Feeding, feed him/her as much as it will eat in 15min’s. Count how many it eats in that time, and that’s how many i would feed it every day or every other day. I would use some good grade calcium powder, for extra health.

- No special lighting is needed, I just used a cheap 15watt 18" slim light, from Walmart.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Any other questions, just ask, or PM me. Thanks. Happy Herping!

I don’t think having the cactus in there is a good idea, that could really hurt it. My toads have sand as a temporary ground, BUT I plan on changing it to dirt soon. I use real moss, although its difficult to keep the toads from burrowing under until the moss oficially attaches itself to a rock/stick. the water i have in mine is about 3/4 inches deep and hits them at the throat. make sure they can get in and out easily, too! if you plan on breeding you will need more water though.

Oh, I didn’t mention it but the cactus isn’t a real one. It’s made out of plastic. It was originally for my leopard gecko but he hated it.
