 Help! Please Read!

Ok, so I noticed very recently that my american toad, had never been out of her cave. At first I though, ok, nothing wrong. mabye she goes out when I’m asleep. But then, she seemed to have stopped eating as well. I decided to tanke all look at her, and I put her in a large plastic tub. Then i realized that she wasn’t moving at all. I poked at her, and she moved, but very sluggishly, and her arms we way out of place than when she normally walks. And when she stopped walking, her hands were twisted backwards. I tried to make her jump, but it was only a little hop, and her head seemed to be pointing straight downward, as the jump was landed by her head, not her arms. Please, someone tell me what happening to her. Nothing like this have ever happened to her or any of my other toads. I think she might have Bone Disease, but I’m not sure.

Have you been using a calcium supplement?

Update: Her walking is better, but still very sluggish. I put her in a tub of water to see how well she can swim, well, she was barely using her arms, and her legs kicked very slowly. I tried feeding her with a calcium-dusted cricket, and she tried to get it. but usually lost interest when she didn’t catch it. Her accuracy on hunting has gone down as well.

Two things could be going wrong, first what kind of lighting do you have for her? UVB Lighting is very important for them to aid in digesting calcium. So if you dont have UVB lighting the calcium you have given her was never absorbed. Another thing is D3, they use D3 to absorb the calcium (they get D3 from UVB light, hence why its so important). That does sound like a MBD, a few more details would help though. Such as do you gutload your crickets, or just dust them? What kind of setup do you have her in? Any specifics would help out alot.

I’ve never used a UVB light, I’ve heard that they were not very necessary, and for the fact that for my toads, I have to depend on my own money (which I don’t have much right now) and lights are terribly expensive (for me). I feed my crickets baby carrots and oats, and I put the calcium on their food as well. Her setup is quite simply a plastic tree, a rock cave, a shallow bowl of water, and a lot of eco earth. She refuses to eat at all at this moment, and won’t move as much as she would.

Oh, and I can’t give into my parents about my toads. I haven’t told my dad yet that she isn’t well, and if I do, I’m quite sure that he would release her in the middle of the night while I’m asleep. Trust me, my dad would do that. My mom wouldn’t do that, but she isn’t much help with them. I could ask her for money, she probaby won’t give any to me, because she doesn’t want ot spen money on something that she doesn’t want to get involved with.

UVB is competely not necessary. Toads are nocturnal. They don’t normally come out in the sun at all instead reamaining burried until night. These aren’t diurnal lizards, they’re digestive system is developed enough to process calcium all on its own.

Can you put up a picture. While it could be MBD I would lean more towards an infection brought on by unclean living enviornment or something that got into her cage by mistake that poisoned her. Clean her up, make sure you use calcium supplement on her food and give her a room temperature clean water soak 2-3 times a day. You can try a drop of melafix in the water as an anti-fungal or bacteria medication. Do not release it. If it is sick then all you’re doing is introducing a disease to the wild populations. Frog and toad species are going extinct as it is.

I cleaned her tank about less than a week ago, so it should be clean. But while I was cleaning the tank, I noticed a bunch of cricket carcasses in the eco earth. Could that have caused the problem? The tank itself was pretty dirty, and I haven’t had time to clean up as much as I used to. Ill have to thank my dad for putting crickets in her tank without permission. I tell him to just put them in the cricket cage but sometimes he won’t listen. Right now she doesn’t eat at all, so I’m going to have to wait until she wants to eat. I put the cricket cage in front of her tank, so that i will know when she wants to eat. I will try the melafix, it might help.

Now, she never gets out of her rock cave. Her water bowl hasn’t been touched for days. Even if I take her out to see how she is, she goes right back in. At this point I am really scared for her health, because I don’t know whats going on with her. Sorry for no pics, my camera is broken.
