HELP!!! My toad has convulsions! I have a 4 month old Western Toad. Was healthy and good eater until a few weeks ago. She spit up some blood. Could the meal worms bite her from the inside? Then two days ago she looked like she had convulsions or uncontrolable shaking and twitching. Please help!!

HELP!!! My toad has convulsions! I still don’t buy the stories about mealworms surviving in digestive fluid, with no air, long enough to do any chewing damage. It could be some kind of parasite, or if there’s anything potentially sharp in there like sticks or wood shavings it could be a splinter. This sounds pretty serious, and I’m not a vet. You may need one. Oral meds might be in order to help the stomach normalize, but I have no idea what they would be. If it’s parasites, you’ll need something for them, too, although what it is will vary depending on what they actually find. Easier to digest meals are a must. No mealworms unless they’ve just shed.

HELP!!! My toad has convulsions! Sorry to say but convulsions are sign that a frog is on it’s last leg. Take her to a vet if you can. I would guess it’s a bacterial infection from unclean living conditions that caused the toxins in her system to build up, but it really could be anything from a parasite overload to fungal infection. Can you provide a detailed list of how you’ve been keeping her, changing water, and her substrate?
I also raise my eyes at someone who insist meal worms can eat a frog from the inside out. A healthy frog’s stomach acids would knock a mealworm out pretty fast. A sick frog however...

HELP!!! My toad has convulsions! Well, she is still not eating/pooping. From the start Ive used the compacted coconut stuff but didnt care for it b/c the stringy stuff seemed bothersome to her. So I switched to this soil looking stuff that said its for toads. There is a Nature Center nearby that uses it for their Western Toads. She had always pooped in the water dish so it was changed daily and if any crickets died in there I would take them out immediately. I change the substrate every 2 weeks so with all that I think she has a pretty clean tank. It is a 10 gal with a fake tree, food dish, water dish and a toad house. The vet here charges 50 bucks to check her out and I really cant do that right now so unless there is something OTC I can get I’m just gonna have to hope for the best.
Ive switched to wax worms and crickets but she just looks at them. Wont eat. She is shedding a little. Maybe that has something to do with it. (???????)

HELP!!! My toad has convulsions! You can put her on papertowels until you get her healthy again. You can try a melafix bath. Melafix is a natural medication for fish to fight against a host of bacterias, fungia, and some parasites. Follow the directions on the bottle, but halve the strength. Then give her two 10 minute bathes a day for a week. You can also pick up some pedialyte from a pharamcy (non-flavored) to add electrolytes to her water and give her some energy, maybe stimulate appetite. These methods should be fairly cheap. If she doesn’t eat her food right away take it out so it doesn’t bite her.
FYI, amphbians drink through their skin, hence the bath treatment to administer medication. This is also why you shouldn’t handle them, the oils and salt on our skin is toxic to them and can aid in weakening their immune systems.
