Its at room temperature as I’ve been told that toads don’t need artifial heat or light. Its in a 40cm square tank with earth, a water bath area and places for it to hide including a flower pot which seeems to be its favorite place. Will try butter/wax worms. Tried maggots which it used to love but its not interested. Usually use room temperature water to bath it but will try warm water. Will let you know and thanks for advice. Regards Jane |

Toads usually take a long time to lose weight. Impaction does NOT cause weight loss. In fact, it causes bloating, quite the opposite. So I suspect parasites. If at all possible, get a stool sample, put it in a ziplock, and refrigerate it. Freezing often makes the results of their test undependable, although I didn not know that with my cane toad, and the nematode infestation still showed up anyway. If you can find the vet and are willing to spend a little, they will identify the source of teh health problem and, probably, prescribe oral medication to be administered,in most cases, about once a week. What it is will depend on what the toad has. I had to do it once to mine a few years ago, and she’s never had a relapse. Some vets in America, once they know you, will simply do a stool check, ask what the animal weighs, and prescribe medicine, thereby shaving a little off the bill and saving the animal some stress, since it never actually has to enter the office. But most, if you’re new, will insist on a regular checkup in addition to the stool check. I have no idea what the rules are overseas. |

I wouldn’t try feeding for a day or two. Give it some warm temps for a bit, then re-introduce food. If that doesn’t work then you might try to get a fecal done by a vet. Even non-herp vets should be able to do a smear. |

I just found a very helpful man in an exotic pet shop in Bovingdon UK. Uno (Thats the toad) is definitely a British common toad, he has one exactly the same. He says he believes that it thinks its getting ready for winter so is starving itself and adviced a heat mat to attach to back of tank. The extra warmth will encourage him to eat and carry on as before without hibernating. His eats the same food we’ve been feeding Uno so we got the mat today and have attached it. I’ll let you know if it works. Regards Jane |

Not eating for five days, at room temperature, should not result in dramatic weight loss unless there’s something else going on. If they’re sick from worms or microbes they lose weight faster, and if they’re at too high a tmmperature they lose weight faster, but under normal circumstances ALL toads take a week off now and then with no signs of physical harm. Sometimes they fast before a shed, because they like to scrape their old skin off in one piece, stuff it into their mouth and reswallow it preserve nutrients. And then they skip another meal or two, because they’ve just eaten skin. But sometimes, they just skip a few meals, seem fine, and then go back to normal with no harm. The lack of appetite is not the big problem. The weght loss is. And in this amount of time, the correalation between the two just isn’t as strong as it would be with a mammal or even with a high-temperature lizard. At the very least: see if you can find a product called melafix. There’s a thread somewhere here on this forum that goes into details on how to use it. It’s not a universal cure. Nothing is. But it’s fairly versatile and, in the U.S. at least, available right off the aquarium store counter. |
