 Setting up FBT tank? advice?

I’m thinking of setting up a fire bellied toad tank in a 20 gallon I have free (unfortunately it’s not a long). From the info I’ve read I understand they need land and water, but I’m not clear on how deep the water should be. the set up in the pet shops is VERY shallow, but I realize pet shops don’t always have ideal conditions.

Anyway, I was wondering if they need a very gradual increase in depth, or could I use a turtle dock as the land so that I could also give them more swimming room? Also what about those rock look filters? are they a waste of money or will it do the job?

Fire bellies are not great swimmers, so the water depth should be about 2 or 3 inches maximum. These little dudes get about 3 inches long, so the water shouldn’t be deeper than they are able to stand up and breathe if they like.

If you’d like to use one of those decorative waterfall filters you can. of it is not too steep, you could use that as your land portion in the enclosure. FBT’s don’t make a lot of waste.

A half land half water tank is fine. They are great swimmers. You can silicone a piece of custom cut glass from Home Depot in at an angle so it is easy to exit the water and partition off your land part.
