A new family member! :)
Just went out herping in some back woods, caught a male Bufo Americanus. There are NO CB americans where I live, so I just create a stress-free environment for them. He will be in with my female, Tilly. I’m deciding whether to name him Cocoa (he’s a light milk chocolate color) or Lucky (he was a very lucky catch). Any suggestions would be helpful. Also, I’m goin’ tomorrow to buy some Calcium powder. Will reptile calcium powder work? I know to get a 2:0 formula, and should I get a multivit. powder too? I gutload their crix and mealies with carrots, so their beta carotene should be about sufficient.

P.S. In hindsight, I shoulda looked for a female; they’re in my room (low traffic, no chemicals) and I’m just a bit worried about having a "toad alarm clock"...

A new family member! :) I would get the vitamins, because most of the vegetable gutload isn’t going to be digestible. I get a lot of mileage out of feeding greens, yams, and zuchini to insects for my collared lizards, because while they’re carnivorous by preference they do still have an omnivorous digestive system, but toads have a huge stomach and tiny large intestine so only the meat and the tiny amount of vegetable matter that’s been completely broken down into its component molecules will actually be utilized. The best gutload would probably be something like carnivorous fish food, but it’s not necessary if you’re dusting.
If they’re adults, then if they each eat one good meal a week that’s been dusted with vitamins and calcium they can eat undusted unloaded crickets the rest of the time and still thrive.

A new family member! :) OK, thanks. I went to petsmart (closet pet store by far) and got some Rep-Cal with Vitamin D3. Costed 9 bucks, but is worth it. Going back toon to get Rep-Cal Herpivite after I read your post. I’m also going to get them a better water dish, since right now it’s just a soft plastic black shallow container. It is a good depth for them, but I read that soft plastic can release chemicals, so I’ll get an Exo-terra big Repti-Rock dish soon.
On a positive note, Lucky and Tilly had a great meal tonight! Lucky’s calmed down quite a bit, and he ate his first crix tonight! I’m so proud of him!
