 Rescued American Toad...

Yes, he is a rescue. Our baseball team caught him a week ago, and decided to make him their mascot. The dragged him around to games, didnt feed him, and his foot is messed up. I got ahold of him, and need to know what to do.

I have him on dirt (no chemicals or anything in it) with a water dish to sit in and half a paper cup to hide under...it was a quick set up. I ran to the pet store and got some crickets. He has eaten four of those, a pill bug, and a worm. (he was really hungry!)

He is about four inches long. What else should I do for him to make him more comfortable?

That’ good he’s doing great! I love Bufos (terrestrial toads). I keep 6 different species. You sound like you’ve got him set up OK. Don’t forget to get him some vitamins (administer by dusting his feeder insects w/ it once a week). Also if you’re going to keep him you might want to give him an upgrade in tank furniture... that’s always fun. @ 4" it sounds like you’ve got an adult. What size tank do you have him in? LOL!

He is in the only extra tank at the moment, seeing as my room could pass as a zoo. x.x

He came in one of those tiny critter keepers that isnt fit to hold anything but crickets, and I have him in one of those but larger...I think eight by twelve? It was all I had. I might be able to convince my mother to let me get something larger, but she isnt a huge person and already at ler limit, lol.

Because I am more of a reptiles person, I have a few questions.

Does he like his dirt dry or moist, and then how moist?
Should he have moss or rocks in there with him?
Live plants ok?
Are feeder insects the only things he should eat?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want him to be as comfortable as possible.

Don’t worry about the questions. I’m more than happy to answer them. I’ve read when setting up a Bufo tank, to let one side of the soil (probably the soil nearest the water dish) stay moist/muddy and one side stay relatively dry and let the toad choose. Moss is good. Rocks in a moist environment worry me because of the fall/drop risk. Large enough toads are able to take pinky mice, but they’re fattening, and toads are a risk of eating themselves to obesity. You can put him in a cheap 5gal glass aquarium tank (I’ve got my Texas Toad, Tex in one and he loves it), and he should be god to go.
