I’m freak’en out and NEED HELP

I have four FBT’s. Two male and two female. In the past month (maybe not quite that long) I have noticed a huge increase in noise from their tank and that my one male (Sushi) seems to be trying to "bully" my other male (Lazy). It seems that Sushi dives at Lazy when I put crickets in at feeding times and even when they are just swimming around.

Well, now I am really worried. I could hear a ton of noise from them so I went over to the tank and Sushi and Lazy were both standing on their hind legs with their fore arms around each other. (Like humans look like while hugging)They were splashing around in the water and "calling out" and I freaked. I went to open the top to separate them and they both jumped off each other and swam away.

Should I be separating them? I really don’t want to find a dead toad one day. What is going on? Is it some form of play? I personally don’t think so but.....

Any advise would be greatly appreciated....I am very worried.....

Rebekah, it makes me think about Larry and the fact that maybe he didn’t escape!!!

ewww thanks T-mom... for THAT visual (Larry being eaten)!

2 of mine has done that whole head lock looking thing a couple of times, but they got over it. I would keep a close eye on them, make sure they’re not hurting each other (no visible wounds or such), if it escalates or doesn’t die down soon, then separating them may not be a bad idea. The fact that they can be distracted from their "fighting" might be a good sign. If they were truly trying to kill each other, I doubt they would separate so easily. That whole rage taking over thing.

I wonder if its time for a bigger tank?

You refer to the possibility that Larry "disappeared" in the tank. Have FBTs ever been known to eat another FBT? I did not think they would do that.

I’ve read on other posts that it is possible but I don’t know for sure myself.

We really do not know what happened to Larry, but I do know that one of my others have scaled the sides of the tank clear up to the top. I’ve never found him outside the tank even after completely taking my enitre bedroom apart, but I do have a cat that keeps a watchful eye on the tank, so who knows. I assumed that eating an FBT would at least give her an upset tummy (which she never gave any indication of such). No one will ever know but the cat I suppose.

The other FBTs that were with Larry were pretty much the same size as him, but the biggest one DID die about 2 weeks after Larry disappeared. Like I said, we’ll never know for sure.

RIP ~ Larry ~

I’ve read where any herp will eat another or at least try, but I’m thinking if they’re close to the same size it would be really difficult to totally eat each other, try perhaps, but totally?

Eh, what do I know? lol

How’s things goin with your situation anyway T-Mom?

Rebekah

The above pictue (I don’t think) is mating....besides, my two that did it are both male, and both are well aware of it because they are always on top of my other two that are female.

I’ve only seen this behavior in males kept in large groups (20+). I have always assumed that they are fighting for dominance as it’s normally only the older larger males in my group that fight like this and they are normally the males I choose for breeding. Likewise it only really happens during the main breeding season.

As for your other toad I think the likely hood is that it escaped, they can eat each other but there would need to be a significant size difference.

Pollywog...I only have four toads...two male and two female.I am positive about their sexes. As far as I know, it is not their "main" breeding season so why would they be doing this. The two males have been "barking" at each other alot lately, and are doing other things that leads me to believe they are fighting...should I separate them??

By the way...main breeding season or not....both males have been on top of one of my females alot...like everyday!!!! It’s like if one isn’t on top of her the other one is.

The extra calling and amplexing would point to them being in breeding condition so I would put it down to that. Although it’s now December their "breeding season" can be at anytime of the year, have you done anything to encourage them such as alter tank conditions?
It is nothing to worry about I’ve yet to see any of them hurt each other during these little displays.

I have done nothing to alter their conditions...although, it is winter here so the house does tend to be a few degrees cooler than normal. Their water temp. is around 68-70 degrees F. right now. It hasn’t been really cold yet buy with in a month or so it will dip down to about minus 20-30 (Celsius.)

I actually don’t want them to breed so trust me...I am not encouraging that!!

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Maybe theyre just play fighting? Lots of species do that for fun (males) dogs, elephants, rats.

Actually once we thought that the one toad ate the other one and they fight all the time and the one toad likes to almost swallow the othr toad when it’s feeding time I am guessing this is just a thing with the FBT because I have read through these replies and it seems as thought the toads like to fight one another I know mine do and I thought one ate the other one once it was crazy

Easy girl, stop freak’en out, freak’en out.
Males will try to mate with other males, they just grab each other and the one that is grabed will try to let the other know he has the wrong one. Fighting is not a trait of the FBT. They are more defensive and passive. If you are truely concerned and can afford it get a bigger tank and create an environment with plants and logs( I use african drift wood that can be purchased at a pet store). You sound like the kind of person that is truely concerned and not just a drama queen.
Have you heard them coo yet, they don’t just bark. The cooing is very melodical and almost hypnotic to listen too.
