 Just purchased 2 firebellied toads

We just purchased 2 firebellied toads for my daughter after she fell in love with the ones that were the class pets at her school. Now that we have them im kind of at a loss of what to do with them. I have them in a 10 gallon tank with aquarium rocks and about 2 inches of water...i have also pushed some of the rock up to the side of the tank for their land..what other sugggestions are out there that are low maintenance( i have 4 children and a husband to deal with also lol) I also dont know what sex they are even though one appears to be slightly darker in color and slightly smaller and the girls said it was making some kind of noise (thats how they discovered the gift lol) ....any help out there for me?

I have two males (front legs are broader and they make a croaking sound) and two females. I had them in a 29 gallon aquarium for two years then just transferred them to a 40 gallon tank with about 3 inches of water and a varying layer of rocks giving them land and pools of water. I also have three pieces of wood(this wood I used in my previous tanks for fish, you can get in a pet store) to climb on. I also have planted pathos around the tank. It all together resembles a little jungle. They have been so happy they have presented me with three batches of eggs. The first batch(approx 100 eggs) I lost, because I didn’t know what to do and I wasn’t ready for them. The second batch(another approx 100 eggs) I was able to rescue approx 75 of the and put the in a 5 gal incubator tank. The eggs developed into tad poles after about a week and now the tad poles are two weeks old and you can see their eyes, mouths and the shaping of their bellies. I don’t know what to do the the third batch. They are comming to fast......

Our adult Fire Bellies, croak(some say it sounds like a barking) and then occasionally you can here a melodical tone that has the most intriguing, hypnotic affect. I could listen to for hours.

Have fun they are precious.

I just got a fire bellie on tuesday and fed him about 10 crickets last night(thursday). He has eaten atleast 6. But he has been hiding all day. He looks bloated and unhappy. Do they over eat or does it take a while for them to digest? New at this...not sure what his normal behavior is. I know they’re supposed to be active. Thats why I’m alittle worried about him.

My advice to everyone with questions is to read the care sheets on this forum. They will answer 99% of your questions.

Good luck! :)

I have a 10 gal tank also, which has like a cave thing in the water. thats bout it and they seem happy enough. I notice that one of my frogs tends to get darker than the others sometimes, i just figure hes in a different kind of mood.

Believe me...I have read every care sheet there is. There is nothing about their behavior after eating. Can anyone help me? He is still in his cave. I think he came out once for water last night though.

How big is your toad 6 is quyite a lot for one feeding. You should feed the 4-5 crickets every other day.

Red,

He’ll need time to adapt to his new home. Hiding is perfectly normal during this time. He needs to feel safe. Try not to disturb him too much for the next couple of days and I’d be willing to bet that by Monday he’ll start to venture out more.

Scott’s right about the feeding. I wouldn’t feed him again for another day or so. My toads would stuff themselves stupid if I’d let them. Sometimes like us humans they don’t know when to say when. lol

I have some questions for you:

How big is he?
How big is your tank?
Do you plan to get more? (they seem happier in small groups)
And finally, tell us a bit about your set-up

Ali,

If you’re looking for low maintenance, I suggest putting a submersible filter/pump in your tank. It will greatly lower your maintenance.

Without a filter it’s recommended you do partial water changes every 3-4 days and total water changes every week to 2 weeks. These guys are can be dirty little buggers depending on how often you feed them and such.

With a filter, there is no need to do anything NEAR as often. I add water as needed and do a partial water change once a month (along with a good cleaning overall - including filter)

The color thing usually is nothing to worry about as some are naturally darker than others and some tend to change colors. If you notice yours changing, pay attention to when they started changing colors. There are several factors can cause this, once you have them for awhile, you’ll be able to determine them a bit easier. For now a couple of reasons can be either stress or temperature/humidity.

Stress can be caused by many things; not enough space, too little space, too many hands coming at them. Once they adapt to their new environment, they’ll become more and more tolerant of their surroundings. Just keep in mind, all amphibians do not tolerate a lot of handling so keep it to a minimum. If you must handle them, be sure to wash your hands and rinse them very very very well prior to touching them. Wet your hands with pre-treated water and keep them wet the entire time your hands are in contact with the toads. After you’re done, wash your hands again. FBTs are not killer toxic, but when they feel threatened they can release a toxin that will cause skin/eye/mouth irritation. Some believe that captive bred ones do not produce this toxin, but I still take the cautious route, besides its just good hygiene. lol

A thermometer and hygrometer are a must! If you don’t already have them I suggest that you get them. This will add to the "low maintenance" part as well. There are several opinions about what’s the best temperature for FBTs ranging between 70-80 degrees. Pick a temp that would be the easiest for you to maintain naturally and stick with it. If you keep your home a steady 72 degrees, that should be ok, but if you notice they’re not as active as you’d like for them to be, then add something as simple as a desk lamp over the tank. Use nothing higher than a 40 wtt house bulb and position it over one part of the tank (mine’s over the water to keep the water warmer). I keep my light on for about 10 hours a day, turning it off at night.

I’m not sure how old your children are, but this is a great opportunity for them to learn responsibility in pet care. Give them tasks they are to do everyday, for example, one can have the job of turning the light on and off everyday, another can check the temperature for you. Of course Mom will have to play back up, but it will at least keep them involved in their care.

Ok, now that I’ve made this an incredibly long and boring post... I think I’ll stop! lol Please keep in mind that I’m not an expert and am just sharing what’s worked best for me. Everyone will have different opinions to what works best, you just have to figure out for yourself what information will work best for you :). When setting up a tank, try to think like a toad lol, sill I know, but think how well you’d like a home with nothing in it but some rocks and water compared to something with plants (fake is perfect for the busy people), soft moss to hop about on when not in the water yadda yadda yadda.

Here’s a picture of my current tank, but I’m working on a larger one and will be posting pictures soon (Scott lol )

I hope this helped both of you and please keep asking questions!

Rebekah

Thank you so much...I feel a lot better now. We only have one FBT. He’s in a 10 gallon tank with half water, half land, some rocks and a cave. I will be adding plants in the next few days. It looks like he ate the rest of the crickets, too. I think I will wait until Monday to feed him again. The pet store said about 12 crickets every 3-4 days. but I was thinking maybe he was scared and had no other hiding placees too. Thanks so much!

It looks like you are going to have access to a great deal of valuable information. I hope you have a very enjoyable New Year.
The only thing I can share is that I like to use african drift wood and live pothas plants in my tank. It is easy to grow an abundant amout of pothas in hanging planters and pick new ones if needed. The plants I have put in the tank seem to grow and seem very happy in the tank.
I will attach some pictures I took.

Have a very happy new year.

Your tank is beautiful. I have a picture of our tank, but not sure how to get it here. Its in my photo album. Its not much but he seems alot happier today. I put the plants in this afternoon and he seems to be doing very well. But I think I will still wait until tomorrow to feed him anymore.

Red,

You may want to think about getting your little guy a playmate lol. If you DO decide to get another one, quarantine it for a couple weeks first, no sense in either of them making the other sick. The whole quarantine thing is another debate (along with gravel vs no gravel, what’s the best substrate yadda yadda yadda lol), some will say they’ve had no issues without a quarantine period and others suggest 3 months. If you’re anything like me, I couldn’t wait the 3 months so I took all of mine to the vet and had them checked out (very much to my husband’s dismay lol). His suggestion was if you purchased them close together from the same place, 2 weeks should be ok. Eh.... opinions and such.

Anyway... to post a picture on a message, just click on "get your photo list", pick the photo you want to add and click the button that says c"make code for this image" or something to that effect. Just try it, its easy! :)

Good luck

Rebekah (and yes Scott, you spelled it correctly, good job! lol)

I dont think we’re ready for anymore yet. I think I should get used to this guy first. Maybe in a month or so. He ate the two crickets I fed him yesterday in no time. Should I feed him two more today? Her’s the tank and picture of ’Red.’

This was some great info and your tank looks great...I added some fake plants today and a little rock cave..the toad that for some reason i have decided is a male seems to like to hide in there the other one who i believe is a female like to hangout on the fake lily pad that is attached to the fake branch....i also seem to have noticed them to have been involved in some well umm "friendly looking activity" but im not positive. What exactly do the eggs look like so i know what to retrieve when and if i see them? Theres already some nasty globby looking thing in there that i cant figure out unless thats what toad poop looks like lol.
