 Can anyone give me advice on my tortoise??

i have just bought a 4 year old hermans tortoise........hes very cute. when i pick him up his tail becomes untucked....does this mean anything?
also when does he need to start hibernating.im a bit wary that he’s not going to wake up after?? thanks...i would appreciate any comments

I wouldn’t hibernate this year as a safety precaution. New torts are stressed and they may be sick as well. It is always good to observe a newly aquired tort for a year before attempting hibernation. Besides, it is a choice ... don’t feel obligated to hibernate him.
