Thats not a Russian tort. It looks more like a sulcata tort(third largest tort in the world). A tank or a vivarium is NOT suitable housing for a tortoise as it provides poor air circulation. A indoor rabbit cage woud be far better. What’s your substrate? How often do you give supplements? What supplements do you give? What do you feed your tort? If his shell feels soft it could be shell rot. This is maybe from to much humidity in the enclosure. Hope this helps DD |

Then again possibly a desert looks at its shell colors, can you get any better photos of its belly and legs? (easier to tell by the scales on legs). Again dd said tanks or vivs are bad, the best would be indoor rabbit cage, rubbermaid storage tub or something like that or a self-made tortoise table. sullys are not highly the easiest to care for! |

Where do you live? if in the USA some states theyre not allowed to be kept as pets and other states you need a permit. heres some links for their care: http://www.tortoise.org/general/descare.html http://chelonia.org/Articles/Gagassiziicare.htm |

The scales and shell are completely different. this is a baby sulcata:
notice the scales on the legs are brighter, and their much bigger and more of "spike" shaped. and notice codys tortoise doesnt have that..
baby desert tortoise looks more like codys tortoise
its either or its a gopher tortoise
