 Tortoise

i am thinking of buying a tortoise that does not need a tank and UV light. What sorts could i get please?

Joe (12 years old)hibernates in winter and lives in the garden in the summer

i do have cage but no lighting .my old next door neighbour had a tortoise in her garden and it lived longer than her. she had it in her shed with lots of hay but no lighting i dont no would type of tortoise it was and it was big.

they can get shell rot and a soft shell without UVB lighting and could go blind if left without light for a long period of time. what the heck are you talking about "no cage"? do you mean a fenced area?you should not even have a turtle if you can’t afford the costs.

ok seriously... they HAVE TO HAVE UVB!!!!! you can house them inside and have a UVB bulb or have an outside pen were they can get UVB rays from the sun

they can live many long years with out uvb lighting but that doesnt mean its a healthy life. they need the uvb rays to live long HEALTHY lives. if your not willing to do that for a tort then look into getting another pet that doesnt need it.

Redfoots do not need uv as much as some tortoises, they are fine with a small uv light and a heat light.
But as far as i know, all if not most tortoises need UV.

The only way you’d get away with it is by an adult tortoise thats fully grown, give it a permanent outdoor cage for summer and indoors hibernate it.
Tahts the only time you’d get asway without a light.
