 I found a turtle

So I found a turtle on my doorstep this morning. I believe he is a tortoise. He is as almost as big as a dinner plate and has a low profile shell (not a big mound) and a long tail and sort of long toe nails. It seems as though he may have gotten tangled with a dog as he has chunks missing out of his shell in 4 places (either side of his neck/head and either side of his tail). It does not seem as though his feet are that webbed. I have had a box turtle all growing up but this one is larger and his shell is more of a low profile. I am wondering what I should feed him and how I should set him up. I was thinking a kiddie pool in which he could climb out of by placing rocks in it. I am in the Sacramento valley and as you know it is summer and we get a very dry heat. I know I can put some vitamin e oil on his shell. I was thinking of giving him shredded lettuce, cabbage, and carrots. Just not sure if I should get him some feeder gold fish or grubs. Any suggestions?

Could you post a photo of him? Care is different for every type of tortoise/turtle, so making sure he’s safe is the first step, and identifying him is the second.

He was lucky to find a doorstep such as yours : )

Hey, dragon girl is correct, we need a photo.

Also, there are certain types of tortoises and turtles that have similar care to other species and types.

Anyhow! depending where you live, he may be wild.
please check if turtles and tortoises are natively wild in your area...if so he could be a wild turtle or tortoise.

for now, i’d offer things like romain lettuce, dandelions, clover, hibiscus flowers.

Are you in Sacramento California? Are you absolutely sure it isn’t a Cal Desert Tortoise? If it is it is illegal for you to keep it unless you have a permit from fish and game. Contact the Sacramento Turtle & Tortoise Club they will know for sure what kind he is and the proper care for him, and if he is a desert tortoise and you wish to keep him, they can easily get you a permit. His shell could be flatter than normal and his nails too long from improper diet and care. He probably hasn’t had proper diet and been able to dig and burrow in the ground, are you sure hes not someones lost pet? If you’d like I can give you the address in Sac of the C.T.T.C., I am in Bakersfield and have a permitted Desert Tortoise from the Kern County chapter.

 I found a turtle

Hello all,

I found that this turtle is a turtle that can be found on the American and Sacramento Rivers. I released him at the Sacramento Marina where I see several happy turtles like him. He seemed to like the environment. I am not sure how he ended up on my doorstep but he definitely does not belong in the concrete jungle of a neighborhood where I live. I live on a very busy street and I am surprised he made it to my doorstep from wherever he came from. Thanks to all of you for your advice!
