I found a tortoise and want to keep him, now what?

Hi. I was riding my horse down in the park and found a tortoise. He was sitting in the middle of the horse trail in a muddy puddle, only his shell was showing. He could have been killed if stepped on by a horse. I picked him up and brought him home. Right now he is outside in my lettuce patch. Its a fenced in enclosure, chicken wire. I would like to keep him for a while...but would probably turn him loose again later. What do I do now????

Hi where do you live?

If your in the USA, and depending what state, it could be a wild box turtle or wild tortoise of some sort.

If not, the you should really post up "lost tortoise now found please call" as some kid may of lost it.

For now just feed him dandelions, clovers, thistles, romaine lettuce, and some rose petals and hibiscus flowers.

I dont have pictures yet, but he is so cute. I think he has taken down a lettuce plant, but I have not seen him eating anything. He spends a lot of time in the water, and when I do make him get out of the water, He likes to just sit around and he puts his head up like a telescope....swiveling his head all around. I moved his water pan to another spot, and where the hole was left, I filled that up with water, and he went right in it and was like digging in it, and then looking at me. do you think it could be a female? Maybe wanting to lay eggs? Do they lay in mud?

Is there anything I can feed him/her that would be irresistable to a tortoise?

if it is hot, some tortoises like to sit in chilled muddy puddles.
My pair of hermanns tortoises LOVE to chill out in a chilled puddle on hot days.

however, it could be a TURTLE?

You might want to be careful of keeping the tortoise. I live in PA as well and certain turtles like blanding’s turtle, eastern box turtle, spotted turtle, and wood turtle are illegal to own or take from their natural habitat: Link. You should find out exactly what type of turtle/tortoise it is (post pics-many knowledgeable people on this site) and if it is native then it should be taken back to where you found it and put somewhere close by where it would not be hurt. Others may disagree and say to keep it but if it is a species that is not legal to have and you get caught then you could face a large fine.

I am going to take him back to where I found him...but I would like to keep him for a little bit first. He spends all his time sitting in a big pan of water I put in there...I have put various things in there for him to eat....daylily bloom, nasturtian, sedum, rhubarb leaf, plus there is all that lettuce in there growing. I gave him a slice of banana, and later it looked like he had taken a couple of bites from it. Mostly, all he does is sit in the pan of water. I will post a pic. I posted a pic it is in my photo list. now sure how I put it in this discussion

I saw the pic-definitely an eastern box turtle so I would put him back. I would not keep him any longer especially since legally you can not catch him and/or keep him. When you take him back, put in in the same general area, off the road/path on which ever side of the road he was facing-turtles are determines to get where they are going. I know it is tough to put him back but you have to do what is best for the turtle and for yourself.

Yes, I am going to put him back, soon. Yesterday he ate a big chunk of banana. It was interesting to see. He is not afraid of me at all, and he is sssooooooooooooooooo cute. I love him. I call him Tortellini. But, I know he will be happier being free. So he will get another horse ride back out to the wilderness.
