 Eastern or ornate?

well a few days ago i found a hungry eastern or ornate boxie in the woods crossing my path. i wasn’t sure what kind it was so i took some pics, fed it, and let it go in the almost exact same place i found it.
i’m not sure what it is. it isn’t a 3 toed or western for sure. either an eastern or ornate- i’m thinking ornate.
it had lots of scars and at least 1 toe missing on each back foot.it has a weird
scar on one of the back feet too.
i don’t think it’s an eastern by the yellow mark on its head/face. i forgot to get a plastron shot.

beauty, i would say definately a Ornate box turtle Terrapene ornata ornata.

I would also say he has something wrong with one or two of his or her feet? they look sort of deformed.
Depending where you live, he or she may be wild.

and also for the past months Gottee has been finding tons of eastern boxies... no westerns in those woods

AND also correct me if im wrong... Gottee lives in florida, there are easterns there but westerns only go about as far east as New Orleans.

but wait!!!!! theres more! only have about five lines on each scute... BUT THEIR SUBSPECIES the Desert box turtle can have TONS of small lines on each scute simalar to to the one gottee has pictured.
BUT DESERTS only live in west texas, the sonoran deserts, northern portions of Mexico, and south - central new mexico.
So what would it be dooing in FLORIDA?
lol thats my arguement against the statement that it is a ornate box turtle

maybe i discovered a new species!lol
yes,i live in the panhandle of florida.
that’s how baffled i am. i am thinking it’s a cross of an ornate and eastern.it might have some desert blood in it,from an ancestor.probably was an offspring of an ornate and eastern, then moved farther east to florida.
think about it, this turtle may be 50 years old for all we know. it could easily travel that far in 50 years.

yeah, it had lots of scars on its feet.

i couldn’t get any really good shots because it was moving around too much.

i already have been,and it’s easy!
it’s so funny, the people here in florida can’t tell a 25 pound common snapper from a 2 ounce florida cooter. they just call every turtle or tort they see "a snappa". "yall no dem snappas will byte yer fingas off when it gits big". yeah, so i tell people that find box turtles that they’re very vicious snapping turtles and will bite your fingers off if you touch them. and it works! it’s hilarious!

yeah, pretty much a small rainforest!

i’ll try to see if any of the box turtles are on the banks of the stream right now.usually there’s one splashing in the mud.

A turtle will not travel out of its natural range by itself it would migrate with a group... but why would it do that? it wouldnt. they dont NEED to go (or want to go) to that kind of enviroment... its unatural for them and does not have their correct diet.
and also, there are so few western box turtles... they dont really "expand" to other parts of of the country.
If anything they are dropping in numbers.

Well anyway... that is an awesome little forest you got there, good luck!

i mean like years ago some group may have either been brought here or migrated here. someone probably just brought it here to florida some 1-100 years ago.

well its not an ornate or desert... most likly a VERY colorful eastern.
Look at the pattern on each scut its not distinct lines it like a more colorful enlarged eastern pattern

so there’s 2 subspecies of the western box turtle-
ornate and desert box turtle.

4 subspecies of the eastern found in the US-
1.t. c. carolina
2.t. carolina
3.3 toed box turtle
4.gulf box turtle
5.florida box turtle
and the 2 that aren’t are the yucatan and...i don ’t know the other one
is this correct?
