 Greek Tortoise ?s

I have a gecko, salamander and newt that have all been under my care for more than a year and I work at vet clinic so I know how to take care of sick herps.
Well, we have a greek tortoise that ended up at our clinic and I’ve read a few care sheets..he’s about 8 inches long and in a 10gal tank. way too small..
so the care from what i’ve read is..
a 4x6 turtle table, daily made salads, hides, sand+dirt substrate or aspen, and making sure the heat is right.

i’m in college and i work but as long as i buy the fresh veggies and soak him every week and set everything up for a terrarium, would he be considered relatively low maintenance?

i’m considering taking him home if he is sick so i can hospitalize him and maybe keeping him.
so can anyone who keeps this species give a rundown on what they need on a daily/weekly basis?

that is very correct.

heres a few links to help out!

www.tortoisetrust.org
www.chelonia.org

And yes, he would be considered low maintenance, also dont forget a uvb reptile light.

enclosure ~ indoor rabbit cage, or a tortoise table.

Bedding ~ soil and playsand 50/50 mixture. alternatively, aspen bedding or hemp bedding. OR bed-a-beast.

Lighting ~ uvb light good brands such as reptiglo or reptisun work best.

Heat ~ a spot light provides nice heat, or you could possibly use a cermaic heat emitter.

Diet ~ 1.Aloe Vera
2.Bamboo
3.Bedstraw (cleavers)
4.Bindweed
6.Roses (petals and leaves)
7.Bristly Ox Tongue
8.Buddleia
9.Cacti (some not all)
10.Calendula Marigold/Daisy marigold
11.Campanula
12.Carrot tops
13.Cats Ear
14.Clover
15.Cornflour
16.Cut Leaved Nettle
17.Dandelion
18.Evening Primrose
19.Forget Me Not
20.Gazania
21.Globe Thistle
22.Hawks Beard
23.Henbit Nettle
24.Hibiscus
25.Honeysuckle Flowers
26.Hostas
27.Knapweed
28.Lavatera
29.Lavender
30.Lemon Mint
31.Mallow
32.Milk Thistle
33.Mimulas
34.Nasturtium
35.Pansies
36.Plantains (all)
37.Pumpkin Flowers
38.Rape
39.Red Nettle
40.Ribwort Plantain
41.Sedum
42.Shepherds Purse
43.Slender Speedwell
44.Sow Thistle
45.Spotted Nettle
46.Stinging Nettle
47.Sunflower
48.Trefoils (all)
49.Verches
50.Violets
51.White Nettle
52.Wild Cabbage
53.Yarrow
54. Romain lettuce
55. Red & Green leaf lettuce
56. Cucumber (during summer only for extra water)
57. Dead nettle
They can also eat things such as endive, escarole, raddichio, romain lettuce, spring greens, turnip greens, carrot tops, mustard greens and salad mixes.

DO NOT FEED FRUIT, CUCUMBER, TOMATOES, CAT OR DOG FOOD.

also a dish of water, prefrably that can fit the tortoise in.

and then you should also soak him at least twice a week.

during summer they should go outdoors in a summer habitat. this could be the indoor rabbit cage or a rabbit/guinea pig run. the natural uv rays is better than artificial uvb rays.

put a few hides in the indoor and outdoor cages and they should be fine.

alright, that sounds awesome.

haha..the outside thing could only be for short periods in my situation. i have 3 dogs that would probably kill it if i left it out there. i would definitely take it outside daily for a couple hours if it needed to be there, but overnight etc it would have to be indoors. it wouldn’t get the uva/b at night anyway. :)

i definitely want a tortoise someday, but i do hope to move in a couple of years and i already have 3 herps and a kitty. plus, the tortoise is technically owned by petsmart, so i’m only gonna take it in if it does have some disease/something unfit for a normal home because i wouldn’t feel morally right to take their animal.
but because they drove an hour to get it to our herp vet..there’s a good chance it does have a real problem and i want to be ready to be a tort mom. :)

i’m going into work in 2 hours, so i’ll see what the diagnosis is on the tort, i just want to be prepared if it does fall into my hands. thank you soo much, you’re very helpful.
i’ll post again after work tonight!

during summer 1 hour is the equivalent of 12+ hours of artificial uvb lighting. So during outdoor times you can just put him out for say 45-60 minutes and then bring him back indoors.

well, i have good news from the tort’s point of view. he’s been eating critical care for herbivores really well and is on antibiotics and is clearing up well so he’s gonna get to go back to the petstore. i was only gonna take him if he needed me, but he’s recovering just fine on his own. =)
thank you so much for your help though, i definitely learned more about torts for future knowledge :D
