what is loose substrate?

at the moment we have paper towels around his water bit and newspaper around his heated bit.
and we have a plastic box that has moist moss in it.

we also named him Camo

loose substrate is substrate that’s loose- like tree shavings(aspen, cypress, reptibark, etc),soil, sand, ecoearth and bedabeast, calcisand, millet seed, hay, etc.
all loose substrates can cause impaction in leos, and ironicly, calcisand is the worst.
non-loose substrates are newspaper, paper towels, rocks, stones, foam climbing structures, etc.they are all good for leos as substrate.
leos should never have loose substrate unless laying eggs or for their moist hide(moist hides should have moss and/or ecoearth).

his substrate is half paper towels and half news paper!
