Yes, new Texas tort! pics come tomorrow

Found crossing same place as my gopher and amphibiandudes russian.
With luck I may be able to breed both Gopherus species to each other.
Man when I put the female texas tort in with the gopher... the male (who was before sleeping) did nothing from there on out but follow her wherever she went
Pics comming soon!

If your planning breeding the texas with gopher i dont know if thats good, and with them living together.

See they may be a same Genus, but they are two different species.

Texas Tortoise ~ Gopherus berlandieri
Gopher Tortoise ~ Gopherus polyphemus

The reason i say that is because a Testudo hermanni hermanni cannot live with a Testudo hermanni boettgeri, even though they both are a hermanns tortoise.

They are still 2 different species.

It actually has been known for various species to cross breed, but it is still wrong. They may have same care, diet and housing... and even similar areas where they come from. But cross breeding i do not agree with of any animal.

Just to let you know tay... I am aware of any dangeres in breeding. I have been breeding and selling herps my whole life.
I will always put my animals first, before what I want from them. And I can assure you I know what I am doing. Breeding Goperus species in captivity is a amazingly hard thing to do. But Im willing to try. But if ONE thing goes wrong with them being together...’WHHOOOOOSHHH’ they’re separate and to themselves.

I know from studying torts that Gopherus species live in colonies and do very well together than alone.
I have noticed how they walk and graze in different parts of cage at certain parts of day, sleep in burrows, or bask at others.

I will not put My Gopher Tortoises on the line.
And just for proof of intergration in wild. The desert and texas tortoise species have been intergrading in some parts of mexico as well as other types of Gophers.
Texas Tortoises are actually thought to be G. polyphemus ’Gopher tortoise’ just adapted or "Evolved" to texas climate.
And people are starting to breed different types of gophers in captivity to try to get ’NEW’ morphs, Which are really just hybrids or mutts.
This is just some info I have gathered off of websites, books and people over the years.

sry just one more thing before I post pics.

Tay I too beleive that in some species of reptiles... Hybridization is wrong.
But these tortoises are out of their native habitat (most likely poached) and I have NO way of getting them back. Most likely have been mistreated and tried to be illegally sold. But Tortoises as well as all other animals, I beleive all have this in common... They are born to reproduce, and if they do not you have not only lowered the population of the animal, But taken away its purpose of life. I TOTALLY think its wrong for people to go find things at petco and keep them in a little cage till they die... no point to their lives but making the breeders money. In my breeding its reptiles first. I the people im selling to wont take care of them (like petco) I will never sell, no matter what price.
And if I am able to breed these torts in a few generations down the line I will get pure Gopher and Pure texas tortoises.
I am not breediing thse to make cool looking mutts and sell them... But for the well being of the species.

I hope this makes since pics come NEXT POST lol

wow I didnt read that anywhere, Its not even native to this part of texas.
I wouldnt think they would fine me for saving it off a road.
I will do more research... And if it is illegell I will contact teas wild life and game so they can take it.

and also I dont know if it is wild or not. They are sold in the pet trade (which is one of the reasons they are endangered)
And since there are so many tortoises in found crossing that area that are not native... why would this one not be, I know it couldnt travel from the coast and southern plains to up here.
I am not quite sure what to do now. I dont see how it can possibly be wild... but I dont want to get charged $500 hundred dollars for an animal we saved from getting crushed by a bus

Reading about it more, dinaknber is very much right. Like she says, the Texas tortoise is protected, and game do often search forum boards looking for people have have snapped up a texas tortoise from a road side or forest or whatever is in texas.

Without sounding disrespectful or out of order, but i would of just moved the Texas tortoise to a safer area, rather than taking it home. It may very well be a Wild tortoise.

Yes your not even supposed to touch them in the state of Texas..When Matt got one a few years ago from rescue he had to do something..Dont remember..Tay do you remember that..He had a friend that found an abandon clutch of eggs or something like that I dont remember..But I do remember he was scared tio have it because of how strict Texas is about them..I read if you see on even if you get caught helping it across the road you can get fined and they are stricter about the Texas Tort than any other Texas native animal..I was gonna do tort rescue a few years back and was talking to a lady that has one down south Texas somewhere and she was telling me what to take and what not to take and if I ever get a Texas Tort to call her cause she had the permit to transfer it from Dallas to where ever it was she was from. And even when she did things like that she had to let Texas wildlife know what she was doing..Its all crazy

Yes, i remember Matt having something like that happen, i think he had found an abandoned eggs nest, and not far by a texas tortoise or something like that. But yes i remember, he was VERY scared to have himself in that situation because of the Texas laws and what not.

I am a UK resident, so i have no clue about the laws and regulations to do with Reptiles or any animal for that matter out of the UK area. However, i have read alot of websites and books that are dedicated to USA only. And alot of states, specially tezas are very high and strict to do with endangered and protected species of many animal kinds.

If i was you, i would maybe release her back where you got her from, just put her further back so that she is not near a road side or anywhere dangerous.

Thank yall for your posts,
This Post should serve as an example about knowing your local laws.
I thought I knew mine but they must have changed over the years. These are my favorite and most honored tortoise.
And I will respect their laws to protect them. I will call Texas Game and Wildlife today or tomorrow.
Man ill miss him he is the most docile amazing tort I have ever had.
thank yall again

Maybe not release her back where you found her. But i would deffinately make a phone call or some kind of contact to your local wildlife reserve or maybe the Texas court of law and ask them about it.
