Its fine being dark the other side.

I just currently seperated my tortoises, and both their lights are on the left side, leaving the right side rather dark.If you want the other side brightened up, just use a very low wattage bulb that doesn’t heat up to much. usually a 20-40watt does fine.

btw the cage looks fantastic. Although i would add some plants, maybe some rocks and bark. Russians are very true diggers and to my opinion climbers. They love digging around and climbing over things.

Mine is dark on the other side as well. I plan on putting a few 18" florescent sun bulbs for more plants, and ultimately convert over to 18" uvb bulbs. Maybe put it by a window and time thier uvb as close to the sun time as possible. That way the whole thing will be lit up a little more during normal daylight hours. I have my CHE turn off at the same time as well because it only gets down to about 70 at night.

keep them in pots and just mound the bark around them, or put soil under the bark and just have a shallow top layer, kinda like landscaping and mulch. If your wood isn’t stained or sealed, you should put down plastic or something because being damp all the time will rot the wood.

It will still rot, just not as fast. Treated timbers for fences still rot, it may take 10-20 years, but torts live longer. I made the same mistake, so when I redo the substrate I need to line 6 inches around the sides. Mines just lined on the bottom.

Yeah derek, they might. I used pvc shower liner and stapled it to the bottom and caulked around the edges. Linnoleum sounds like a great idea as well.

i suggest glass rather than wood... wood= pee soaked in a few years... itll be hard to clean the bad smell out of it too....

Glass i not what you should keep torts in.... it confuses the torts and they will continually try to go through it... second... it has bad air circulation and can cause the tort to over heat....
Tort table are the way to go....
If you line the enclosure, you won’t have the saturated pee smelll
I will try to post some pictures of my tort tables later

first off i wanna say the cage looks very good. i like it.

but i honestly don’t see what the difference is between that and an aquarium as far as air circulation goes.

Hey Dahlia,

Wood is porous and glass is not. Glass holds heat and humidity much better than wood, but has poor circulation because it only goes in and out the top.

well... the cage posted...not too much difference
however, most aquariums have high sides and the glass holds the heat.. i guess...
but with the high sides and narrow widths (most aquariums) .. there is bad air circulation
I have BIG tort tables with no lids.. nothing here to get into cages either though..

well for aleopard tortoise u want the heat and humidity to be held... same in the case of a sulcata... the only torts u really dont want high temps for are redfoots... IMO so i prefer glass... and for the confusing part... tortoises are very smart and quick to pick up that its a solid surface that cant be just walked through...

The humidity will hold just fine and properly if the substrate is moist/damp under the heat lamp at all times... That will give warm humidity and yes..
All torts need heat however, they need a cool end too and that is hard to accomplish with a glass aquarium.. as it holds overall heat within the enclosure and doesnt allow for the tort to choose which micro climate it perfers...
If you talk to anyone who has kept tortoises for a decent amount of time.. they will more than likely tell you the same thing... I follow the advice of people who have researched and been keeping and breeding healthy torts with little or no pyrmiading for over 35+ years
and as for redfoots...they come from an area where the climate is very warm... They need higher warm humidity in dark hides and this can be accomplished by using spagmhum moss (kept moist) in a hide with a ceramic heat emitter ... I also provide UVB and a regular heat lamp
Jackie:)

Sorry Derekclintondrake...didnt mean to hijack your post :(

sorry for this its a beautiful enclosure... anyhow J&C you have no idea what the hell you are talking about... science proves that plastic aquariums hold heat moreso than glass due to the light not passing through it...
also... ceramic heating rock is a really good way to severely burn the bottom of your tortoise... learn what you are talking about kid... the thing you are giving advice on is not appropriate advice... and i never said that redfoots need less humidity i said they needed less heat... and to contain the amount of humidity they need its best to have a 75watt bulb so it extracts moisture and holds it...

Im not going to do this with you...
I am not a kid!!!! I am an adult... you came here asking for help and then you argue with what is being said...
I do know what Im talking about and I have done research and gave you sites to prove my findings...
I am not on this site to argue with you...
If you dont like the advice then you should just ask your breeder/store and follow what they say

PS the SHALLOW VERY OPEN top plastic cement mixing tub WOULD NOT hold the heat like the VERY small glass aquarium that you want to sick the poor little tortoise in

Sorry for hijacking again! But Jo3Madness, you or your cousin whoever posted that! Needs to get their head sorted!.

Jackie is a long time tortoise keeper, and knows what they are on about. I am a long time tortoise keeper and made many mistakes, to the result of 2 dead tortoises because i was just like you! Stubborn. Went against everything everyone told me, i fed pellets, kept them in a crappy glass / plastic tank, fed them the wrong stuff and did the wrong things...but i learnt from my mistakes =] and now have 2 amazing tortoises!

I believe if you don’t change your ways you’ll end up with a dead tortoise.

Like Jackie said, we are not kids...i think we’re more mature than to bicker with you.
