Redfoots have better personalities usually but require constant warm humidity and lots of hides!!! Both are great torts!! good luck, Jackie:) |

I got the Russian today! Just wish I knew how old he is, also will he always pee all over me or is it cause he’s nervous? I bought: Play sand Hay Top soil Alfalfa hay (to eat) A Cuddle bone UVB Bulb and fixture Heat lamp Food and water dishes Dust for foods Greens = colored greens, kale, mustard greens, parsley, tomatoes, did I miss any? So did I do good and what am I missing? I measured the bottom of his shell he is 3 inches wide (across) and then long ways from neck to tail (on the shell only) is 4 inches.. Any idea about how old he might be? Someone said a yearling maybe! Ok so please share ur info and give any advice and tips.. I’ll get pics soon... Thanks all Amanda |

Tortoises are not exactly to be handled regular unless needed during cleaning and bathing. Otherwise leave him be. SPECIALLY don’t bother him for 1-2 weeks make sure he settles and eats. Get rid of AlfaAlfa, it contains to much protien for russians. get rid of tomatoes, go to www.russiantortoise.org Looking at him, he looks about 3+ years old. And in very good condition! |

Do they just eat greens or do they also like meats like bug or worms? |

2. Although the red footed was amazing and very pretty my home tends to be on the hot and dry side a large part of the year, I still might get that one too, but I am holding out for another box turtle. I miss mine, had it for a very long time. |

NOW I am having a problem with the tort. We named him Russel and calling him Russ anyway he will not eat at all for me and wants to sleep 24/7 he stays in the same spot all day and all night. He is active when I take him out and very active when I soak him but not in the tank. The temp is around 93-95 on the hot side under the light and the cool side is about 75. But where ever I place him in the tank that’s why he digs and goes to sleep I don’t think he has even explored the rest of the tank, I have him a very nice hide. So any ideas? Bird: I sent you a message! Amanda |

Good hay choices are timothy, orchard grass, burmuda hay you can check out LINK for everything Russian Tortoise You just need to give him a few weeks to adjust to everything You should ask the pet store guy if he can find out if he was wild caught.. Which he probably was, but I would actually guess that he is older than six but could be 20... Full grown males are usually at least six and thats what you have In the picture, it looks that he may have had oil of some kind rubbed on his shell... just a note,,, if so, please dont continue this... they "breath" through there shell kind of like skin and the oil can do damage in the long run.. its not helpful Just another note... Hibernating is not something you should just decide to do yourself... I personally dont hibernate any of my Russians but if the tort is not 100% healthy (with a fecal sample taken and a vets approval) then they might not wake up from the hibernation...it happens quite a bit its not a chance Im willing to make myself and all of mine are healthy torts Do you offer a water dish in his enclosure so he can drink and soak himself if he wants? There is many other greens you can offer and that are even better than the greens you listed... Endive, Enscarole, Dandelion (greens and flowers), catcus pad(minus the spines) Variety is the key... NO fruits.... torts are built to handle the sugar.. but if you can find pricky pear (the fruit of a catcus). that is a good treat...all of the things can be bought a larger grocery store He looks great!!!! Good Luck, Jackie:) |
