 Burrying Her Food..

My recently purchased red-foot tortoise, Gretta has now started to burry her food. About 20 minutes after I put her food dish in the cage, she burries the entire dish and refuses to eat anything. I don’t understand why she is doing this and I am very afraid that she is going to get sick from not eating. SHe is going on day 3 of not eating anything :( Any ideas of why she could be hiding her food and then refusing to eat it ?

 Burrying Her Food..

I never thought about that. But I am actaully feeding her the same thing that she ate while she was at Petsmart. I know exactly what she ate there because I actually work there. She gets romaine, winter mix leaf lettuce, kale, red lettuce, occassionally spinach, and a strawbery or a tomotao once in a while. All of things things get rotated around each feeding. Oh and I am also growing grass inside for her as well.I also plan on giving her more of an assortment as soon as she starts to eat like she used to.

Hmm everything sounds ok, have you tried switching her food to something different everyday or every other day?

Is the grass grown enough to eat yet? If not you can try the thing of cat grass Petsmart sells, before I had grass in my russians enclosure he loved to eat the cat grass.

Just keep offering her fresh food everyday and soaking her and if it keeps up too long she might need to see a vet. Good luck.

In the mix you give her, the only suitable things I saw were romaine and kale. Romaine is the best of the lettuces, but it’s still not very good. Most lettuces are just water and fiber, romaine has a few nutrients, but not much. Too much spinach is bad. It contains oxylates that bind calcium, which is bad. As for burying the food, that’s a mystery to me. I hand feed my two russians and if they don’t like something they claw it out of their mouth, but I’ve never seen them bury it. Try thinly sliced cactus pad, carrot or squash. Or clover flowers. My torts go crazy over these.
