Gretta and her new cage It looks nice. How far away are the lights though? I would try and add some edible plants here and there to break up the area a bit and make it more interesting for her as well as help with humidity. I’m wondering how you keep the humidity high with the wire cage, are you misting her a lot or keeping a moist place for her? Also can she get into her water dish all the way? They really like the water to soak in. Just some thoughts :)

Gretta and her new cage Thanks for all the ideas. I do have sphagnum moss in her cage for her, i mist that 2x per day. The water dishes that are in there now are too small for her to be able to completely soak in but I am working on finding larger ones...its not very easy though. if anyone has any ideas as to where I can find some, I would love to hear them. Also, I LOVE the idea of edible plants in the cage. ik will have to do some research to find out what plants I could use. I will post some updated pics once I make the changes. :)
Thanks Again for all the feedback!! =)

Gretta and her new cage You can use a plastic paint tray for a water dish or if your substrate is deep enough you can set in a large tupperware or litter box. If its too hard for her to get out of you can lay a flat rock in one end or cut out a little part of the side for easy exit :) I use large tuppaware/storage containers but have heard they some people really like the paint trays since they are sloped.

Gretta and her new cage Thanks for the great idea Heatseeker!!! =) Im going right now to the hardware store to get a paint tray!!! Im also working on ideas of how to help keep more humidity in Gretta’s enclosure. Im thinking I might put in her my 55 gallon for now until I can come up with something for humidity. I will just put some construction paper along the bottom of th tank so she cant see out of it, I know glass isnt the best for them...but it will only be temporary

Gretta and her new cage You can also use a very large rubbermaid storage container - they have 55 gal ones... some people cover half the top of the tank with foil and have the substrate 6in deep or so and keep one end moist for them. I think the glass tank would be better for a RF then the wire cage... but the storage container might be better then glass... its really your choice though. I’m sure it would work fine if you covered the bottom half of the front of the glass and completely cover all other sides. Just my opinoin tho :) I had one of my boxies in a glass tank for yrs before I found out I shouldn’t and he did ok in it. What r u using for substrate?

Gretta and her new cage I am using the sphangum moss/fir as substrate plus I am using the sphangum moss in her house to give her some extra moisture, she seems to love it, she likes to hide in the moss.

Gretta and her new cage Sphagnum moss or peat moss? I couldn’t see the sphagnum in the pics :) its the fluffy kind of moss, that looks sorta like the stuff that hangs off of trees. Where do you get fir? I haven’t heard of using that for them, hmm. I have heard of cypress mulch or the coir bricks (bed a beast). Is the fir you have more like bark? Just curious :)
Yep most torts and turtles will dig down if you have it deep enough. I keep mine about 6-7 inches deep and they love it!

Gretta and her new cage The substrate is fir and sphagnum peat moss, I guess its what they call jungle mix...thats what the bag says =) I actually found on a redfoot forum to use the sphagnum/peat moss stuff for her because it helps hold in more humidity. I did recently buy the sphagnum moss at work, we just started carrying it so it unfortunately was not in the cage when I took the pics =( but it is a whiteish, almost stringy looking stuff and it works amazingly well to hold in moisture =)

Gretta and her new cage Just wanted to say hell yeah to the paint tray idea. I’ve been using shallow tuperware that isn’t shallow enough. The substrates deep enough, but I had to fill it with rocks so she didn’t face plant on her way in. She is like a cat with a litter box when it comes to that thing. I change it, she poos in it right away, at least once a day. It’s a pain to disinfect 5 huge rocks every day. Thanks for the tip.
