 Indoor sulcata pen

What does everyone use for indoor sulcata pens I was using dirt/sand mix but very heavy and makes a mess. Dont want to use hay because of fire hazard. Was thinking indoor/outdoor carpet? The pen is in my basement and is on a concrete floor. I have seen some reptile parks keep them on concrete floors for the winter and put them outside in the summer but would think that would ware their shells. Any suggestions welcome.

How big is your Sulcata? Does it have a pen and if so how big? Cypress mulch is good and less messy. Theres also coir (bed a beast). Some people use aspen shavings but you have to provide a humid hide for them or they will get too dry and make sure they don’t eat it with their food. Hey is too dry and can not get wet or will mold. They like to burrow so they need deep substrate. keeping one on cement only is not a good idea, it could cause problems for the tort later.

One is about 15 pounds and one is about 15-20 pounds. They spend warm days out in the yard but I live in Northeast of U.S.A so it gets cold in winter and am getting their new pen built. Its about 8 feet by 6 feet.

They sound pretty big. Most people in the colder climates keep them outside at that size all year by giving them a tort house (like a dog house or something made with cinderblocks) that has a heat emitter inside and a heat mat like the kind for pigs. They put flaps on the front to help keep the heat in and at night they block the door so the tort has to stay in and the heat stays in more. Or some make a large shed for them if its extreme weather so they can be locked in for the winter. The sheds have them same heat as the little tort houses. I think is that case when they are older they just use aspen in the shed or grass hay but it is very messy when they poo and drag it all around.
I’m sure they would do fine in your basement in a pen. I’d try the cypress mulch if you want less mess and that way one part can be kept a little moist if needed and they can burrow still.
