Trimming Nails..
Hey everyone, I was just wondering if there is a safe way to trim my tortoise’s nails. They are SUPER long. I just got him and I have rocks and stuff in his new home that I know will help a little bit but I was wondering if it’s possible to trim them safely.. Thanks!

Trimming Nails.. Well depending on what kind of tortoise would depend on how you trim. If it’s a larger tort you can use dog clippers, the ones that close together in a circle, or use a nail file or sandpaper. But the smaller the tort the more you’ll have to depend on hard surfaces since the nails wont be sturdy enough to use sandpaper. But be sure to have some quik stop in case of bleeding. Also if you’ve never clipped like dog nails then do a little reading about the quik and how to look for it. Also if you need any additional info go to tortoiseforum.org They have some really good info and great people to answer your questions. I even think there was a question just like this posted recently. Take a look.

Trimming Nails.. every day hold them a little above a side walk for a minute or two or just let them crawl around on one. The rocks you have may not be gritty enough to wear them faster. I take mine outside once a week, sometimes more. I make sure they get some side walk time because it really makes a difference.
My recent rescue had really long nails when I got it, but a month ago the vet said they looked great and commended my idea. I personally wouldn’t cut any animals claws. I go the natural route or sandpaper. Another good thing is put them on the sidewalk and make them reach for treats. They will get up on their claws and that helps too.
