 New baby desert tortise!

We are getting a baby desert tortoise (captive bred) next week. He/she is slightly smaller then a billiards ball. I will be researching a lot before we get him/her, but any advice from experienced tortoise owners would be appreciated. I own leopard geckos, several species of aquatic turtles, frogs, birds, and fish; but never a tortoise so this will be a new adventure for us. He will be spending the winter inside in a large plastic tub, and we will figure out his non-winter home when spring comes around. Me and my family are ready for the commitment. any advice would be appreciated. thanks again.

I read on your other post that you do not think you need a permit to get one that is captive bred - but yes you do if you are indeed getting an actual desert tort you do need to adopt it which requires filling out the propper paperwork. They are protected and you have to go through the propper channels to keep one, even a captive bred one. Someone should not be selling you one it is against the law- you are required to ADOPT it. Please check into this before you get it.

It was donated to a place that helps autistic adults and kids function is society. a litter of 6 was donated by a breeder. They found out that they didnt have the room to keep these torts. So they are giving them to reliable people to take care of them. My dad is childhood and best friends with one of the "top" people, and knowing we are good with animal care (especially reptiles) we were given one.

You still have to send in for the papers to adopt it or you will have it illegally. You live in CA right? Well its the law to have a permit for one there. the bottom link I am attaching is the application for a permit. I suggest your dad let his friend know that everyone he gives one too has to do this.
