A RT(Russian Tortoise) would probably be the best beginning tortoise. They’re pretty forgiving with husbandry mistakes, and can take a pretty wide range of temperatures. But they still need room, and need ventilation that a glass aquarium just won’t allow. But tortoise tables are super easy to make. A general rule for a tortoise pen size is 6x the length of the tortoise’s carapace for the length of the pen, 4x for the width, and 2x for the height from the top of the substrate. So a 6" long RT would need AT LEAST a pen 4’ x 2’ x 1’, but more is always better. Here’s a great reference site: http://www.russiantortoise.org/ Check it out. Tortoises need to be thoroughly researched before buying one. They live 40-200+ years depending on species, need UVB lighting, and have nutritional needs that must be met to remain healthy. But they are super personable and will probably become your favorite pet quickly if you study up and get one set up correctly. |
