I found this little guy in my backyard. Link

I live in Los Angeles, California, and assume that it was someone’s pet or is a hatchling from someone’s pet. Can anyone identify what type of tortoise or turtle this is?

I would guess its a Desert Tortoise hatchling. If it is, it’s illegal to take it from the wild according to the California Endangered Species Act. Put it back where you found it.

Desert tortoises get BIG and they are not easy to care for. Lots of money involved and they need lots of space. They also live a VERY long time, so it’s a long commitment if you were to keep it. You’d probably have to put it in your will before you die.

If you really want a tortoise do some research first and see if you have the means do dedicate to an animal like that before you get one.

I did look at the picture, and if you’ve seen hatchling pics of desert torts, they are very similar. Not to mention the fact that the person found them in their back yard and they live in LA, CA. Russian torts don’t make sense, since, I dunno, they are found on the other side of the world.
