The Changing of the Season I have a CB russian tortoise. I have him inside right now in a 55 gallon rubbermaid container. I have him under a 125 watt UVB bulb and I keep the enclosure in the mid 80s on the warm side and mid 70s on the cold side. I used to take him/her, no way of knowing its too small, outside about everyday for 45 minutes to an hour if not longer so he can explore, eat some grass and get some great sunlight. Now that fall is in full force I worry. He is just a baby little tortoise and a growing guy. Every time I handle him its like a full vet check up for MBD. The slightest variation in his shell and I’m in full panic mode screaming "Pyramiding, pyramiding, why!!!" Then my roommates all look over and tell me I am just a crazy overattentive parent. I cant help it. What I am asking is: is being kept indoors till probably late March going to serious affect his/her growth? and Should I be on the extra alert for MDB like its my job? Thank you for the help.

The Changing of the Season As long as there is a UVB source within 12" on his carapace, and he’s getting a calcium w/D3 supplement at least once a week, then he’ll be just fine. It’s great that you care enough to worry, though.
Just remember to change the bulb after it hits 6 months unless you have a radiometer to measure how much UVB is being put out.
