Hi,

It does not go by looks on the outside, but on the inside, if yolu buy a WC tortoise, your looking at buying a parisite filled russian tortoise, it will be healthy till parisites get to much, then it will crash fast.

You looking at a petshop russian for lets say, $80
then you have to know that you possibly like 90 percent will get parisites with your purchase therefore you will need to take him/her to the vet, to deworm a few times, like $100-$200
Then The Wild cought torts, have no gurantee and more then half the time they die withing a year from stress and illness so your looking at no tortoise within the next year. I would really wait till you find a breeder around you or when you can buy off line, because your going to save a lot of money and wont have a 30-40 year old tortoise that might not make it a year.

Millerlite your not fully right there i know over 7 people (freinds) that have had wild russian tortoises and all have lived over a year and are still living!! so thats not true if you ask me............i suppose it depends how there kept.
Also apart from parasites and stuff then you could look out for pyramided shells (ok not so ill or anything) but it does note that the tortoise was either fed on bad dieting or kept in wrong conditions.
or there not active and are sleeping ??

Well, i did not say all tortoise dont live past a year, i said more then half dont live past a year. Most people dont take there tortoise to the vet, and parasites get to them, and stress is really bad and gets to them.

The ones i see live are ones that make it to the vet, and are provided with a big enclosure or outdoor enclosure. Also if your friend never took there WC torts to the vet, they better, because you never know they can still have parisites, and it can take few years before seeing problems.

ANother bad thing about wild cought russians , is age, most come into the country old, some are 30-40 years old already, most are probably 20.
